The chemistry of fire and lighting fires without matches

We have been learning more chemistry lately – using the chemistry of fire as our context.

One of the highlights of this has been seeing how different fire lighting methods work when you don’t have the benefit of a match.

I know that many of us are quite grateful for the invention of matches and lighters because rubbing 2 sticks together takes FOREVER!

The photos show 9LDO in action.

The cut out pumice shows the way Maori carried fire around in the old days in Aotearoa so they didn’t always have to start from scratch (using te hika ahi / the fire plough) or with perfectly dry materials. The pieces of pumice had harakeke wrapped around it to hold them together for transporting the embers.
