Glenbrae summer learning journey – Activity 1

This week was a very surprising week. I have never seen someone pull out another from their country so fast. So, basically what I mean by that is that my brothers had recently signed a contract with a rugby club, which is all the way in England. The oldest of all my brothers was picked to fly over first but within 2 days, they told him it was time for him to leave, just like that.

My family has never been the affectionate type but we knew for sure that it’s hard for one to leave the family in a short period of time. It was final, and we accepted it to see him thrive and make his career in England. We genuinely believe he would be a star, and we would all be cheering him on over here in New Zealand.

It was Sunday morning and on instinct, everyone woke up to just be ahead of the day with my brother (teaki). He was leaving at night and I guess we wanted to prepare for his leaving. We played games, we ate some pig, we helped him pack and he said goodbye to our other relatives. After that, time passed way faster and before we knew it, everyone was out the door heading for the airport.

We tried to stay more active on the way down to the airport, just to air off some bad thoughts and it worked entirely but it wouldn’t last when we would soon be letting him off. We arrived and he weighed his suitcase, then checked in with his baggage and then we settled him with some pounds to use once in England. We headed up to the top where he would have also checked into the airplane again. He did have a few hours left to go to security so he waited it out, not trying to rush us into saying goodbye.

But those hours were so fast that he was just standing in front of us. Ready to say goodbye. It was hard to hold back tears but the moment you saw someone who rarely cried in the family let it go, you also let it go. And then it turns into a crying fiasco. I know that the moment I saw my dad cry it would suddenly fill my eyes with waterfalls because it hurts to see another one of my family members dearly hurt. Once one person saw another crying it just kept going and going and going. And then off he went, through that tunnel. Slowly disappearing with that smile on his face, my oldest brother will do nothing but make us proud down in England and I will never stop supporting him. See you on the other side bro.
