The Inner Planets

Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the four inner planets. These inner planets are called terrestrial planets.

Characteristics of the inner planets: They have a solid surface that’s composed of mountains, volcanoes, craters, canyons, and a liquid core. They also have little to no atmosphere. Additionally, they have no planetary satellites.

Mercury: Mercury is the smallest planet and closest to the sun. Mercury’s diameter is 4,879km and its orbit around our Sun takes 88 days. It has no planetary satellites. It is also the second hottest planet due to no atmosphere and is the second densest.

Venus: Mercury is the second closest to the sun. Its diameter is 12,104 km and it takes 225 days to orbit the Sun. Like Mercury, Venus has no planetary satellites, it is also the hottest planet due to its dense atmosphere or CO2. It’s also a retrograde planet which means that it rotates in the opposite direction. It also takes 243 days to make one rotation.

Earth: Earth is the largest out of all the inner planets with a 12,714km diameter. It is the third planet from the sun and takes 365 days to orbit the sun and it takes 23.9 hours for the Earth to make a full rotation. Unlike Mercury and Venus, Earth has a natural satellite, The moon. 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, it is also the densest planet.

Mars: Mars is fourth from the Sun and is the second smallest planet out of all the inner planets with a diameter of 6,792km. It takes 687 days to orbit the sun and a day lasts around 24 hours. It has two planetary satellites: Phobos and Deimos. It also has the tallest mountain that can be found in our solar system. Additionally, there are signs of liquid and frozen water.
