Effects of heat.

Effects of heat

exp no.1 : Tea bag rocket.

In this experiment we were given tea bags, a match and flame. We were required to Tip out the seeds in the tea bag onto the table making a pile, then placing the empty tea bag into the pile standing straight up. Then finally, lighting the match and putting flame onto the tea bag. It then flies up and turns into dust. This was Convection, a tunnel of hot air is created when the tea bag gets so hot it travels up the tunnel of hot air.

exp no.2 : Imploding can

For this experiment we Learnt Contraction. The process of something becoming smaller due the pressure.  Using a Bunsen burner, soda can, cold water in a ice cream container, heating water until boiling in the soda can using Bunsen burner. then when heated quickly putting it into the cold water. It should then, implode!

exp no.3 : Dropping pins.

Dropping pins is an experiment which shows Conduction. Heat travelling through an object. We were told to grab a metal rod and then using Vaseline and pins, evenly space them out and stick onto the metal rod. hold over Bunsen burner using retort stand, and then watch and see how long it takes for each to drop.

exp no.4 : Diffusion in liquid

Diffusion in liquid is the particles move to areas of low concentration till they’re all spread out evenly. In this experiment we did to show this, is using a petri dish filled half way with cold tap water, then using tweezers to drop in a small crystal of potassium permanganate. Then using our Chromebook to time how long it takes. We also did this with hot water, and timed that too, seeing the difference.

My favorite experiment was definitely the Imploding can, because of being able to see the process of something Imploding was new to me. Sadly my groups did not work but thanks okay because not everything works and I could still see other teams that had successful experimenting. Watching the other teams do it was really fascinating, seeing it come out of the cold water completely imploded and deformed kind of.

IMPLODING CAN

Aim: To observe Contraction in gases

hypothesis>

Equipment: Aluminium can ( soda can ), scissor tongs, Bunsen Burner, heatproof mat, tripod, gauze mat, an open container, water.

Method :

1. Setting up the Bunsen burner with tripod and heatproof gauze mat. Pour approx 50-60ml of water into the can, should be no more than 1/4 full. Fill container with cold water alongside .

2. Then, heat the can until steam is escaping from top.

3. Carefully using the tongs to grip the can ( ensure you have a firm hold onto the can before picking up with scissor tongs )

4. Quickly but carefully, invert a can into a container of cold water.

Results : Gas volume pressure inside drops, creating partial vacuum. Imbalance of pressure causes the walls of the can to drop. The cans had imploded.

Discussion :

Conclusion : Heating the can, quickly and carefully using scissor tongs to invert the can into container, filled with water. Can implode due to pressure.
