Forgery – Science

Graphologists are practitioners who analyse handwriting to examine a person’s personality, emotions, and even possible behaviour tendencies. They believe that how one writes—i.e., the size, slant, and spacing of letters—can reveal something about his or her personality. Large writing, for example, can suggest confidence or extroversion, and small, compressed writing can indicate introversion or a detail-oriented personality. Although graphology is utilised in certain personal and professional settings, it is considered more of a pseudoscience because its results are often subjective and not always backed by solid scientific evidence.

Despite this, graphologists are sometimes called upon in fields like recruitment, psychology, and even forensic science. Employers may use handwriting analysis to assess job candidates, screening for traits like leadership, creativity, or reliability. In forensic science, graphologists—also referred to as forensic handwriting analysts—help determine the authenticity of signatures and detect forgery in documents like contracts, wills, or ransom notes. They compare handwriting samples by analysing stroke patterns, pressure, and ink flow to determine whether a document has been forged or tampered with. This type of handwriting analysis is more accepted because it relies on physical comparisons rather than personality interpretations.

While graphology interests some, it is a contentious practice. Scientific studies have generally reported little evidence that handwriting can be a reliable indicator of personality traits. Forensic handwriting analysis, which involves the identification of forgeries and the establishment of authenticity, is an accepted forensic science discipline. While graphology is not a traditional psychological tool, many still enjoy using it as a hobby to understand themselves and others better. Whether handwriting analysis is seen as science or amusement, it still generates interest and controversy.
