Painting with Whaea Monique: Our Ruru Owl Art Session 🎨🦉

This week, we had a special painting session with Whaea Monique, where we created artworks of the ruru, also known as the morepork, a native New Zealand owl. The ruru holds deep significance in Māori culture.

The ruru’s ability to see in the dark represents insight and understanding, similar to the pursuit of mātauranga (knowledge) in Māori tradition. This connection to wisdom and guidance makes the ruru a powerful symbol of hope, especially during challenging times. It reminds us that even in darkness, there is light and clarity to be found.

Whaea Monique shared these stories with us as we painted, helping us understand the ruru’s significance and inspiring us to express our own feelings through art. Each student created a unique ruru painting, showing their creativity and connection to this powerful symbol.

Everyone enjoyed the session — it was fun, calming, and a chance to explore culture, creativity, and our own feelings all at once.
