DNA extraction of a strawberry

Kia ora bloggers, in this blog, I will explain the DNA extraction method for a strawberry. You can’t really find it, but DNA is in the nucleus of a cell and is what makes up chromosomes. But DNA is actually a double helix made up of nucleotides, which are made of sugar, phosphates and bases. Humans actually share about 60% if their DNA with strawberries, and from this I’ve learn that DNA looks weird, but extracting it has many uses 3 of which are forensics, geneology and bringing back extinct animals. Still, this one’s a bit further off.

The method for this experiment is.

  1. Mush ⅓  banana (no skin) in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.
  2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.
  3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir.
  4. Pour into a test tube.
  5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with WARM water.
  6. Leave for 10 minutes.
  7. Slowly pour 5mL of ethanol down the inside of the test tube.

It actually worked, and you could see the DNA but not the individual ones, of course.
