DNA is inside of you, it makes up who you are. Our DNA as humans is actually similar to a banana’s DNA. DNA means the tool that makes up who you are. Genes are also inside of you. A Gene is a small thing that sits on a chromosome. The genes that you have come from your parents and they are passed down to you. An example of this is your eye colour, if your mum has blue eyes and your dad also has blue eyes the blue eye genes get passed down to you. This means that you will have blue eyes. Gene means the tool that represents what characteristics you have received from your parents. An example of two things that are inside of you are Genes and Alleles. An Allele is a small thing on a chromosome, an allele is a small part. You have one allele from your mum and one from your dad. The characteristics that you have are from your mum and dad and it is to inherit. Inherit means to get features from your parents. You inherit your features from your parents such as your hair colour, eye colour, freckles, etc. Your features are inherited from your mum and dad so that is why we always look alike to our parents. The way that decides which characteristics get passed down from your mum and dad is using punnet squares. Punnet squares is a way that you can find out which trait is stronger and gets passed down. In a punnet square you can have a gene from mum and a gene from dad and whatever gene is dominant is the gene that gets passed down. The gene that is stronger is called the dominant one and the one which is weaker is called the recessive gene. Punnet squares is how you can display and figure out which gene is stronger. In my zombie blog I used punnet squares to find out which genes my zombie would get.
Trait means a characteristic that you have. A trait is what makes you, well… you! Traits are what you have and is also a behaviour. Some examples of traits are kindness, loyal, trustworthy, etc. Traits are something that you have, something of the complete opposite is natural selection. Natural selection means nature choosing what stays alive and what goes extinct. Natural selection is the way that nature decides what species get wiped out and which stay alive and adapt to their environment. Natural selection is the decision if animals have strong survival skills. Survival means to keep alive. Surviving is doing your best to stay alive. Animals in their environment use their skills to try and survive as natural selection could wipe them out of existence. Natural selection is a perfect example of survival skills because in natural selection the animals have to try and survive. Survival is staying alive and something similar is reproduction. Reproduction means being born. Reproduction is the system of birth, there is sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. An example of sexual reproduction is humans, the birth of humans is sexual reproduction. An example of asexual reproduction is a plant, a plant is asexual reproduction. Reproduction is the way that things are born. There is a difference between reproduction and evolution as reproduction is the way that things are born and evolution is the way things grow. Evolution means the way that things grow, an example is humans. Humans evolved over time and that is the way that we have grown. Evolution is how things grow and change, lots of things evolve over time.
