Cow Eye Dissection!

Hello readers! Last week we did an eye dissection! I think this was my favorite one yet. The parts were just that much cooler and since the outer layer of the eye was so tough, it was more of a challenge to open. Almost harder than the chicken skin! Everything looked so cool and I thought it was so amazing to do. It was so fun!! We got to see all the different parts of the eye and how they work together to help us see.

Equipment we used:

  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Gloves
  • Metal tray
  • Newspaper
  • Safety glasses

Method:

  • We laid newspaper on the table
  • We put on gloves and safety glasses so we wouldn’t get the fluid inside the eye on us
  • We got scissors and tweezers
  • We got the metal tray that had the eye on it and put it on the newspaper
  • We used the scissors to cut around the middle of the eye to split it, careful not to cut into the cornea
  •  We popped the lens out of the viterous humor
  • We identified the retina and the optical nerve
  • We removed the iris and ciliary body.
  • Done!!

This is what it looked like after we dissected the eye!

The eye works because the iris contracts and relaxes to let eye into the pupil. The lens helps concentrate this light so it hits the retina which processes the light. The retina is connected to the optic nerve that sends messages to the brain. That is a simple explanation on how we see!

That’s all bye!
