Rainbow universal indicator

AIM:

To see how acidic or basic different solutions are.

EQUIPMENT:

  • spot plate
  • universal indicator
  • red + blue litmus paper
  • spatula
  • pipette
    • solutions:
  • dishwashing liquid
  • dishwashing powder + water
  • fabric softener
  • vinegar
  • toilet cleaner
  • spray wipe
  • floor cleaner

METHOD:

  1. in each dimple of the spot plate, put one solution
  2. test each solution with red then blue litmus paper
  3. each litmus paper will change colour, record this
  4. remove the litmus paper
  5. drop a few drops of universal indicator to each solution
  6. record what colour the solutions turn into

DISCUSSION

  • Different household chemicals change into different colours with universal indicator because some were more acidic and some were more basic.
  • An acidic chemical would turn red, orange, or yellow with indicator. Neutral would be green. Basic chemicals would turn teal, blue, or indigo.
  • Universal indicator can be more useful than litmus paper, because it shows how acidic/basic it is. Litmus paper just tells you that its either acidic or basic.

CONCLUSION

  • Our experiment did work because we followed the instructions
  • We could’ve improved our experiment by trying even more chemicals
