We learned how to make a ngatu-tapa cloth during Tongan Language Week. It made me feel proud and happy to be learning about my culture. It was fun to learn how to make a Ngatu and now I know I can do one at home.
These are the instructions:
Materials:
-Brown paper
-Pencil and ruler
-Black and brown permanent markers
-Earth toned felts
Procedure:
- Crumple the the brown paper
- Fold the paper into 4 quadrants
- With a ruler and black felts go over the lines
- Research the tapa patterns
- Draw a pattern in each square
- Outline and colour with black felts
