Hello bloggers today I did a reading task about some stunning facts about the Venus fly trap.Such as
- Home sweet swamp:They only grow naturally in wet, boggy places in North and South Carolina in the USA.
- Poor soil: The dirt in these bogs has very few nutrients, so the plant had to find another way to get food. [1, 2]
How the Trap Works
- Super-fast snap: Each trap is made of two hinged leaves with tiny spikes on the edges that look like eyelashes or teeth.
- Trigger hairs: Inside each trap are three tiny hair-like sensors.
- Counting bugs: An insect must touch at least two hairs within 20 seconds to make the trap close. This stops the plant from wasting energy on raindrops or blowing leaves.
- Sweet smell: They use a sweet nectar to trick bugs into landing on them. [1, 2]
- Not just flies: Their diet includes ants, spiders, beetles, and crickets. [1, 2, 3]
- Digestion time: The plant uses special juices to dissolve the soft parts of the bug over 5 to 12 days, then opens back up when finished. [1, 2]
- Retirement: Each individual trap can only snap shut about 3 to 5 times before it turns black and dies, but the whole plant grows new ones. [1, 2]
