Sebastian Science Climate Change TITAN

  1. What is climate change?

Climate change is the long-term change of Earth’s average temperature and weather patterns. We know that this is happening because weather patterns are changing unpredictably, thermometers measure that the earth is increasing in temperature every year, global sea levels have risen each year every 20mm  or so, and extreme weathers have been more frequent and more intense. The keeling curve also shows that atmospheric carbon dioxide in the world, and shows that atmospheric carbon dioxide increases every year by 425 ppm and over. The cause of climate change is that it happens naturally as well as human activity like, burning fossil fuels, modern farming releasing nitrogen oxide, methane from cattle and sheep during digestion, and most importantly the greenhouse effect.

2. Why do ākonga (students) throughout Aotearoa and globally want to go on strike from school and protest?

students throughout New Zealand and globally want to go on strike from school and protest because, they aren’t in a good environment to learn, as weathers in specific areas effect negatively like flooding which water overflows inside buildings unable to learn in a safe environment. students feel that studying for a long-term future seems pointless if that future is actively altered by a catastrophic climate crisis. These consequences of climate change can be significantly reduced by cutting greenhouse gas emissions to slow down more warming and by actively building communities and infrastructure for changes already locked in.
