I Didn’t Writing – Lincoln

I had to write about things I hadn’t done in the holidays and one thing I did do.  My picture and favourite sentence was about the carrots. My sentences were hard to write and I found it hard to write long words.

I didn’t go to Greymouth to see Dad.

I didn’t go to the swimming pools for a swim.

I didn’t go to my grandma’s house for a walk.

I didn’t play games on my XBox.

I didn’t go to school to learn.

I didn’t fly to the moon for a visit.

I didn’t eat oranges for every meal.

I did eat all of my carrots for tea.

To all our wonderful Weka Iti Mum’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!

We wanted to show all our lovely Mum’s just how special they are and to make them a card for Mother’s Day.

We used an outline of our hand and made some flowers for our hand to hold on to. We chose the colour card and painted our nails a colour that we knew our mum’s would like.

We were very proud of what we had made and very excited about giving them to our Mum’s on Sunday.

For our writing during the week we wrote a story about Mum.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all!

Kahurangi Dance Company

Our senior students were lucky to have the Kahurangi Dance Company visit the school this week.

Based in the North Island the dance company toured the West Coast teaching students Kapa Haka skills.

We warmed up with Te Rakau before splitting into two groups. the boys focused on haka and the girls learnt E Rere Taku Poi.

We can take the skills we have learned into our Kapa Haka performance.

At the end of the lesson, the Dance Company performed a waiata. We responded with our school song before Isal and Harmony thanked them for coming. It was a very inspirational hour of te ao kori.

We have started practising our word writing

We are trying to see how far we can travel on our rockets from the sun with the amount of words we can write. This was our first effort to see how many words we could write in 10 minutes. Mrs Scott was really impressed with us all and she told us with practise and with more great learning it will become easier and we will travel further. We are planning to do this once a week. We have 2 medals we can earn to take home for the week. One medal says ‘I wrote the most words’ and the other medal says ‘I made the most progress’.

Congratulations to Lexi who wrote the most words this time. She wrote 42 words in 10 minutes.

In her hand she is holding a medal which says ……

Keep an eye out for our next Rocket Writing post to see where the medals go next time.

Kia Ora and Welcome to Term 2!

And we are back! What a wonderful two weeks it was.
From what I have been told, the tamariki were very busy, enjoying their 2 weeks of ‘freedom’. Whether it be, flying to Australia, driving to Christchurch or having 4 sleepovers in a row… they all came back refreshed and ready for another term of new experiences, fun and learning.
The main events that I have been asked to report back on from tamariki were Ngā Tipu Tōtara(cactus) and Rōpū Sports.

The tamariki had the best session yet during Ngā Tipu Tōtara as they were doing strength and team building activities. This involved stretchers, weight sausages and piggy back rides!
Kererū never cease to amaze me with their communication and relationships they have formed as a year group. It was shining during this session and was commented on many times. Proud of you Kererū!

We had our first session of Rōpū Sports for Term 2 and boy was it a success!
The tamariki have a new system for their instructions and rotations for the Rōpū teachers and it has been a lifesaver. Not only this, but they were well organised, prepped and took all of the little factors into consideration when planning.
They ensure the games were accessible for all ages, they were easy to explain and could be played in a time-slot of 10 minutes with great progress.
It is wonderful to see the rōpū leaders growing within their roles and how the rest of the seniors are guiding and supporting the tamariki within their rōpū.

All in all Kererū are living up to their roles of seniors within the school and are doing so proudly and successfully.
What a great start to Term 2, I cannot wait to see where the term goes!

Getting out between showers

It has been a case of making the most of the gaps between showers. Today we went out into the fort to count the tree rings on the stumps in the fort. Despite the rain, we have been able to get out.

We spent time observing the rings, noting that those rings near the centre are spaced wider than those near the edges. We wondered what that was all about. Some rings further out were also closer In class discussion, we came up with some interesting ideas about the amount of light and sun available to the plant and the tree age. Looks like a bit of an investigation coming up.

The oldest stump we could find we counted to be eighty years old. When we got back to class we calculated when it was planted.
