Clips & Scratch Jnr

We have been putting the final touches on our scratch animations – Whaea Stacey showed us how you can do more than one page and have them move into the next page. It was lots of fun.

We also learned how to record our screen so that we could record our scratch animation. We’re going to put this onto our Clips video along with our GarageBand song.

Chocolate Chip Muffins

Kia Ora, Talofa

Today I am going to share with you about what I have been learning about. We have been doing measurement with science. We made chocolate chip muffins.

The challenging part of making the chocolate chip muffins was making sure we had melted the butter. On the first attempt the teacher forgot to melt the butter and just put it in. We realised this was wrong and we had to start again.

We then used science to analyze the muffins. We used our senses to look at the muffin. We used to look, see, hear, smell and taste.

Have you ever done baking in the classroom? What was that like?

Ka Kete.

Progress Post – Landscape Art

This is a screenshot of my Google Drawing of a landscape. I have not yet finished it. I wanted to show how far along I have got. I learnt how to use the polyline tool to draw shapes to create my landscape. I did find it tricky to make sure I closed up the shapes when using the polyline. Colouring the shapes was fun using the colour picker tool. I think I will definately use that tool again. It was helpful to find exact colours.

Room 3 visiting Te Takere

Every second Thursday we walk down to Te Takere to give the students an opportunity to get books out from this great library.

We have a class card to get books that students can use to get books to read at school but students are also welcome to get their own card (with whanau permission) which means they can take the books home to read.

It is VERY important that your young person is practising their reading everyday. PLEASE support us by helping them build personal reading habits at home.

We do need an extra adult to walk with us – so if you are free, please considor coming with us to the library on Thursday afternoons! (1:40 – 2:45pm)

Reading Practice Intensive Day 1

What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme?

What can I say? It was a day filled with lots of information. There were so many great examples of how to plan for great outcomes for our learners. I definitely intend to create a different environment for discussion using the approach that was shared. Assessment and looking at self-efficacy are major keys to “growing” good learners.

What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?

Multimodal teaching is grounded in research. The statistics bear this approach to teaching out. This makes me more confident.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners? I will do the reader survey with my learners. I will introduce the ground rules for talk with my learners.

Cybersmart Introductions

Kia ora koutou!

This week in our Cybersmart lesson, we had a fun task getting to know each other better in a digital way. Instead of just saying our names, we created our own introduction slides. It was a cool way to express ourselves and learn some new skills at the same time.

First, we personalised our slides by adding our names. We learned how to highlight text by triple-clicking and then type in our own names. We even got to choose our favorite font styles and colors, which was a nice touch.

Next, we inserted our own photos. We used the “replace image” option, clicked on “camera,” and snapped a photo. It was a good way to put a face to our names.

One of the highlights was creating our own avatars. We used the Free Avatar Maker to design a digital version of ourselves.  It was important to make them realistic. We downloaded our avatars and then replaced the image on our slide, just like we did with our photos.

We also got to play around with the design of our slides by changing the background color. It was simple – we just clicked on the background, then “Background,” and chose a color we liked.

Finally, we learned how to copy and paste our slides into a shared slide deck. We clicked on our slide, copied it using Control + C, and then pasted it into the shared deck using Control + V . We made sure to select “Do not link” when pasting.

Have you made a slide like this before?

Term 4!

Hello! Kia Ora! Howdy! Talofa!

This term we have been super busy! We have been learning about reuse, recycle and papatuanuku (the environment).

We have been creating things for our school market. We were using things we found around the school. We went into our school forest and picked up sticks, leaves, and flowers. We used these materials to make things for the market. We also were allowed to use matierals we already had. In our class we had old magazines and paper. Our teacher and teacher aid had old jbibit pieces, tinsil, and other materials.

Have you ever ever done a market with reusable materials?

Old Fashioned Newspaper Advertisement

In weeks 1-5 of this term, our reading and inquiry topic has been Aotearoa New Zealand Histories.  This week we read about the history of voting in the 1800’s.  Our create task was to make a newspaper advertisement showing how people would have been notified of changes to voting rules.  The template we used looked like an old newspaper.  Below are two examples from Iris and Lucas.

Fake News and how to spot it

For the past 2 weeks, we have been learning about how to spot fake news and creating our own fake news or pictures. We did this by using remove.bg to remove the background of images of ourselves or other things.

To find out if something is fake – check out the URL, ones that are really long or end in .com.co or something silly are probably not real.

For these images we used remove.bg to add in things that normally wouldn’t be there!

Have you used remove.bg before?

What are your top 7 books, that you would love to read in a week (if you could) to fill up a Reading Challenge Pizza wheel?

End of Term Fun!

This week because it is the last week of school, we had a selection of activities we could choose from including: body synth, where you used your body to make different sounds with the instruments; semi-conductor where you used your arms to conduct an orchestra; auto draw, where you can draw simple shapes and it will guess what you are trying to draw – you select the image and can create a beautiful piece of work or scratch, where we could practice our coding.

Here are some pictures of us working.

The favourite activities in our class were body synth and auto draw.

Have you tried any of these activities?
