Week 7&8 Creative Writing

For the past two weeks I have been writing a story for creative writing. My goal was to use a thesaurus to come up with interesting vocabulary.

Do you think I achieved my goal?

“Come, Omen! The time is right!” Commanded The Man In Black. Omen swooped down, landing lightly on The Man In Black’s sleeve. Omen’s gleaming black claw gripped into his arm, ripping the fabric.

They stood together in a field of pink petals, gazing up at a colossal  ruin of a building. The ruins were monumental, filled with spires and arches. Vines crawled up the sides of the tumbled brick-work.

Omen cawed and fluffed his feathers, spraying pink petals that had landed on him everywhere. The Man In Black’s cape streamed out behind him in the wind.

Omen suddenly looked up, spotting a slight movement in the colossal relic above him. He tightened his grip on his owner’s sleeve, alerting him of the movement. The man looked up, searching the ruins, instinctively grabbing the pistol at his belt. Spotting a crouching, dark shape in the ruins he gasped.

“N-No that’s not possible!” He muttered, “The faglen died out long ago, my ancestors made sure of it!”

The creature walked forward on the ledge slightly, enough that the man could see its black crouched body and wings spread out behind it.

The man quivered under his clothes, terrified of the ancient creature standing above him. The creature grinned, showing its long fangs before disappearing back into the darkness of the ruin.

The man stepped back, gaping at the shadows where the creature had stood.

“Omen come! I must study the ancient books for an answer!” He said firmly. He turned around and hurried off, cape fluttering in the breeze.

Back in his workshop the man in black worked, he worked late into the night. He was studying the archaic books of old. He flicked through the pages muttering under his breath.

“No, no, no!” He studied day and night discarding books and picking them back up again. Finally after days of hard work he found what he was looking for.

“Aha! Omen look! Here it says: ‘The Faglen were dark creatures that died out long ago in The Conflict For The Dark Tower. It was a great battle between light and darkness. The Faglen were part of the great army of the dark. They killed hundreds of great sorcerers but were eventually decimated by the wizards. In the aftermath of the battle it was said that one of the many wizards that were slaughtered by the Faglen cast a spell on the battlefield. The spell was rumoured to curse The Dark Tower and all its inhabitants to a life of misery. Soon after the battle had ended thousands of pink flowers sprouted on the battlefield. A remembrance of the great battle that had taken place there. The field is deserted and avoided to this day.’

I knew it, Omen! The Faglen should be extinct!” The man sat back, shocked at his discovery.

Omen cawed and flew over to his owner, perching on his shoulder. The raven nuzzled his head into his owner, trying to comfort him. The man looked scared, things were so much worse than he had imagined. He turned to his bird and took a deep breath.

“Omen, I have decided to go through with my plan and still try to capture the Dark Tower. I will prepare tonight and leave tomorrow morning.”

Omen cawed and peeked at his owner, trying to alert him of the danger he was putting himself in. The man brushed him off and started to pack what he needed.

He collected small bottles of colourful liquids and powers and tucked them carefully into his belt. After he had collected everything he went over to his workbench and picked up one of his ancient books. The man studied all night until it was time for him to leave.

He stepped outside and looked up, in the near distance he could see the spires of the Dark tower.

As the man trekked he thought about what he was doing. He was risking his life in order to gain control of the colossal ruin he had just been to.

Finally after trekking for an hour he came across what he was looking for. The gigantic wreckage looked just as he had left them a couple of days before. The man turned to Omen, who was perched on his shoulder.

“Goodbye, Omen. I hope to see you after this.” Then the man pushed him gently from his shoulder. Omen cawed, swooping down at his owner. But the man just ignored him and took a step forward, towards his doom.

The man picked his way carefully across the debris towards the main pillar of the tower. He was careful and kept glancing up and searching in the shadows. Eventually he found his way to the main entrance of the tower. Hesitating, he looked up, unsure whether to continue.

In a moment, the Faglen that had been watching from the shadows shot down and pounced on the man.

“Ahhh!” The man screamed, pushing and shoving the creature that clung to his body. The Faglen clung on and clawed at the man’s face. The man stopped fighting and reached into his leather satchel for the potions he had stored there. Before he could reach them his body went limp and he fell to the ground. The Faglen stopped clawing and jumped off the man before howling into the sky.

The Man In Black was no more.

Week 7 & 8, Creative Writing

This week we had to write over 200 words. I wrote 687 words in this story. This is what I wrote and the picture I based it off. My story is not finished though.

My goal was to write in paragraphs.

“Oh, my goodness,” Mila said in awe as she jumped out of the truck, into the hot, sunny desert.

They had been in the truck for a long time and only stopped once to have a drink and some shade at one of the rare oases. They had been travelling since before first light that morning and now they had finally found what they were looking for. The pyramid.

“Isn’t it just beautiful,” Ethan said, more as a statement than a question. The building loomed up in front of them like a mountain smoothed by years of sun and wind. They gazed at the ravishing building, lost in thought.

“Hey! Hurry up! Find the entrance and stop day dreaming you…!” He stopped yelling at the two kids abruptly. Mila knew he had almost said something terrible to them. She glared her death stare at the driver.

“Do. Not. Rush. Us,” she said in a cold, icy voice, saying her words so deliberately and carefully that the smug man stepped back and put his arms up in an innocent manner.

“Okay, okay, okay,” he muttered something else under his breath but it was inaudible.

Mila and Ethan were only kids aged 15 and knew each other from an exploring club in the city where they lived. The 2 had investigated and scouted many different places together such as jungle temples, ruined castles, underwater caves and many other places. Their parents thought they had joined a nice little club for kids. They thought their children went on camping trips with a made up treasure map from one of the organisers and the treasure was a bag of chocolates. They had no idea that they were in an advanced network and their last “camping trip” had been escaping from a collapsing Aztec temple which had almost been their tomb.

Ethan shook his head to get the thoughts back to this exploration.

“Come on Mila. Let’s find the entrance. Usually the entrance to pyramids were 15 to 20 meters or so high, and on the northern face. They were also carefully camouflaged to look like the rest of the stone. Gravity kept the door wedged tightly between stones. From the outside the door looked invisible, blended completely with the solid rock.

“To open the door from the outside we will have to find the exact location. We will use the drone for that. Then, once we know where the door is we will have to push hard at the bottom stone. About 1700 kilo grams of force and it will swivel up and inward into the entrance corridor.”

Ethan’s job had been to read about how to get inside the pyramid and Mila’s had been to figure how to move once inside the building.

“Okay. I will go get the drone from out of the truck.” As Mila walked the distance to the truck she thought about the driver. They had only hired him because no one else had wanted to do it. There was nothing in it for him because they didn’t have the money to pay him. No one else had wanted to drive them there because they thought they were going on a wild goose chase. This was a pyramid that none of the early diggers had dug, and it was too expensive for anyone to dig into now.

Oh well, he was helping them but she had no idea why.

Mila came back to Ethan with the drone and remote control. He carefully used the controller to manoeuvre the drone to the northern side of the mountainous pyramid. It flew way above them in the bright sky.

Once there, Ethan pressed a button and a hand looking thing ejected itself from the body of the drone like a jack-in-the-box popping out.

Slowly and carefully it touched the stone of the pyramid and brushed against it, as if it was a piece of glass. It weaved and flew across the northern side of the pyramid until it stopped abruptly and flashed a bright red button.

“It’s found the entrance. Now let’s get up there and see what’s inside.”

Creative Writing Week 8

April 2nd 1984

The cube buzzed with electricity as the girl worked. The girl had been working on the cube for ages and today she could finally finish her masterpiece. The cube could have enough energy to power all her robots and could finally get revenge on her enemy.

As the girl sat and slowly zapped and clanked the cube together with her tools she wondered what she would do first, would she save her father or get revenge? Her thoughts were a mix of anger and worry. Eventually the cube clunked to life and the robots that lay around her stood up to follow their master to victory.

“It’s time,” she shouted.

May 19th 1984

The girl leaped from roof to roof as people on the street below shouted and screamed. It had been six weeks since she had saved her father and had been hiding for many weeks now. The girl only appeared to get food or water until today.

Two hours beforehand there was a loud bang as the door to their hideout was booted open and the girl had woken with the sound of boots thudding along the hallway. The police had raided the house and trashed her stuff. The girl had managed to escape through the back window but her father didn’t hear the bang. He was forced into the back of a van and the girl hadn’t seen him since.

The sun was setting and the girl was searching for a place to rest that wasn’t trashed with rubbish and junk. She found an old rusting can and used it to drink rain water that gathered in puddles around an alleyway covered in moss and other unknown gunk. The alleyway was the safest place to hide and she was tired from running so it was her best option for the night. The robots that helped rescue her dad had shut down after the raid because the police smashed the power cube making the robots useless and weak.

In the morning the sun was blazing and the girl rubbed her eyes as she stood up, her back ached and the sound of cars and trucks boomed into the alley. She walked to the back of the alley and climbed the fence. The girl’s tummy rumbled and she realised that she hadn’t eaten since the raid. Her throat was dry and the girl decided to try and get some food.

She found her way through multiple food stands and busy markets until she came across some fruit and noddles being sold by an old man. The girl snuck up beside the  stall and reached over the side grabbing a handful of noddles and some strange exotic fruit.

Nevaeh’s Recent Highlights

Nevaeh has had a fun and busy couple of weeks since our last update, with lots of engaging moments across play, learning, and interaction with peers.

In PE, Nevaeh joined in enthusiastically and showed some excellent kicking skills throughout the session. It was great to see her confidence and enjoyment during physical activity.

Her connection with Baby continues to be a strong source of interest and motivation. Nevaeh is still very much enjoying caring for Baby, including putting Baby to bed. As always, she made sure to test the bottle first herself—showing her ongoing nurturing and playful “mama” role in her play. In the coming weeks, we are planning to introduce bath time for Baby as another step in her play routine, to see how Nevaeh responds and engages with this new caregiving scenario.

Nevaeh has also been developing her early writing and communication skills. She has been practicing holding pens and using the whiteboard, with a focus on naming people and recognising the letter “N,” especially in relation to her own name.

A lovely idea from Olivia helped extend Nevaeh’s engagement with music—placing the Spa Mirror in front of the piano so she could see herself while playing. Nevaeh absolutely loved this and was highly engaged during piano time. In her lesson with Marilyn, she also showed great progress with two-handed piano playing, including using her thumbs more intentionally.

Alongside this, Nevaeh continues to explore colours and numbers and shows a strong interest in sensory books from the visual resource library in Christchurch. These resources remain a valuable part of her learning experience.

Socially, Nevaeh is spending more time with her classmates, who are increasingly showing interest in connecting with her and sharing experiences. This growing peer engagement is a positive step in her classroom relationships.

Looking ahead, we will be organising peer reading sessions and a small peer drum circle. These activities will give Nevaeh further opportunities to interact with her classmates through shared reading and music-making, and we are interested to see how she responds to these more collaborative experiences.

Geometry Learning Week 1-7

From weeks 1-7 my class has been doing geometry. We have been learning about the interior and exterior angles of triangles and polygons.  We learned about them on slides then after we did printed out worksheets.

I learnt that to  work out the interior angles of a triangle the formula is, (n-2) x 180. This means that if the shape has 3 sides the formula is (3-2) x 180 =180.

I also learnt that angles in a straight line =180.

My favourite part of geometry was doing the worksheets.

Geometery

This term JPI has been learning about geometry and angles in triangles and other stuff.

What I know is that the angles in a triangle adds up to 180 degrees and all the different types of triangles, Isosceles which has two equal sides, Equilateral all sides are equal, and Scaling which all sides are different lengths  I also learnt about the different angles. There is Acute angles which are smaller than 90 degrees, obtuse which is more than 90 degrees, Straight angle which is 180 degrees, Right angle which is exactly 90 degrees, and a reflex angle which is more than 180 degrees.

This is just some of what we have been learning.

Handwriting :-(

Here is the handwriting from today. Next week I will be posting my creative writing probably…

The letter for today was m. And the quote was “When you talk, you are only repeating something you know. But when you listen, you may learn something new.                                                                                                                                             Dalai Lama

Nevaeh’s Recent Learning Adventures

Over the last couple of weeks, Nevaeh has enjoyed many exciting learning opportunities and experiences.

A special highlight was a visit to Marilyn’s house, where Nevaeh had the chance to play on a real piano with Marilyn. She walked in confidently like she owned the place and knew exactly what she was there to do. It was wonderful to see her curiosity and confidence shine as she explored the piano and enjoyed making music.

Nevaeh was also very lucky to receive a beautiful new pair of sparkly slippers from Jackie and her daughter. Nevaeh absolutely loved them and could not stop looking at them, especially when they sparkled in the sunlight.

Imaginative play continues to be a big interest for Nevaeh. She has been spending lots of time caring for her doll and using the crib setup, and this week she also started showing interest in pushing the baby pram around. Looking ahead, we are planning to create a mock bedroom setup in the sensory space to help extend this imaginative play even further. This may include activities such as opening and closing curtains for baby at bedtime, turning the lights off, and playing soft lullabies to create a calming bedtime routine experience.

Nevaeh has also been enjoying sensory learning activities, including colour matching and counting games. Some of these resources were brought back by Amy from a recent visit to the Vision Resource Library in Christchurch. We are hoping to visit again a couple more times this year, as the library has an extensive range of learning materials and resources covering almost every topic and area of development imaginable.

Nevaeh continues to grow in confidence, curiosity, and imaginative play through these experiences.

My grass heads

kia ora this week we have been learning about plant life circle in our reading groups. We describe the different stages. First a plant starts in a seed and then is planted in the soil. Then a little hole that’s were the roots come out of then stuck up the water. Then it is a seedling then a adult plant then the plant go’s slowly dead. Then the worms come and eat the dead plants so all the nutrients go into the soil. So the new plant can get the food its need.My favourite parts was making the grass heads and I made a Hedgehog. First we put the grass seeds at the bottom of the old sock then the soil then we shape it I shaped mine to a hedgehog named Berry. have you made a plant? bye bye.
