Social Studies – Week 1
Social Studies – Week 1
This week in socials studies we learnt about the tree octopus and where its found and why is it endangered. Then we learnt about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and what we can do to help, reduce rubbish flying away into the ocean and harming the animals
Tree Octopus
Where is it found?
In a temperate rainforest on the west coast of north america
Why is it endangered?
For a variety of causes, this octopus is in danger. Due to residential expansion and forestry, their habitat is shrinking. Numerous new roadways are restricting access to the water needed for spawning.
Include 3 facts on the octopus.
- Largest brain to body ratio
- Changes color dependant on their mood
- Mothers are very selfless when it comes to waiting for their eggs to hatch, mothers will go weeks without finding food and eating to protect their eggs

The photo looks like it has been taken while people have been out fishing etc . . .
- Rubbish and plastic all tangled up in the jellyfish
The photo has been taken in the ocean or from a documentary
- Floating rubbish and plastic people have selfishly threw in the ocean
This photo looks like it has been taken not far from the shore line or in a small reef
Garbage In The Ocean
- What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and Where is it?
The North Pacific Ocean contains an accumulation of marine garbage known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Debris that ends up in oceans, seas, and other vast bodies of water is referred to as marine debris. The Pacific trash vortex, commonly referred to as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is a large body of water. It is located between Hawaii and California or the West Coast of North America to Japan.
- How is it impacting the environment in a negative way?
Marine life is being killed by the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and plastic pollution in general. Every year, a million seabirds, 100,000 marine animals, and several other species are impacted. A novel sea surface community of coastal and oceanic species is currently supported by floating plastic trash from pollution, which could signal major ecological changes in the marine environment. According to the WWF, the breakdown of plastic into methane and ethylene accelerates climate change as the earth becomes hotter. Iberdrola, a global electric utility, claims that ocean plastic degrades air quality, pollutes the environment, and causes global warming.
- What is being done to help with this problem?
The Ocean Cleanup team gathered an extraordinary quantity of data through multiple research missions that traversed and above the GPGP to better comprehend the plastic that is still present in this area.

I feel that I will enjoy learning about the topic and what human rights is all about. I may feel some of the content challenging and overwhelming.
- I think Human Rights means… A persons individual belonging within society.
- Who do you think has human rights? Everybody.
- Why do you think human rights might be important? To allow a person their individual thoughts and ideas
- Can you think of a time when you or someone you know wasn’t shown human rights? NO
He iti te mokoroa, nāna i kati te kahikatea
The mokoroa (grub) may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea
I think this means ” one person maybe small, but with support and encouragement their voice will be heard and an outcome found”
My Cybersmart, Pick The Path.
Hello, this is my pick the path. It was for my cybersmart and had to be about a quality blog comments. It took me a few days to do because I have to put the right links to different slides. It’s finally done. Try it out, and tell me how it went. Did I make any mistakes? Do I need to change anything. Is there something I could do next time?
(Zoom in for the last slide)
In the holidays I went to …
In the holidays I went to caddyshack mini golf then we went home and had lunch when we had finished our lunch we went to the movies and watched minions the rise of gru. When we had finished watching the movie we went home and got dressed and watched my sisters brain busters video and she won! Then we went to a friends house for dinner and watched a movie then we went home and went to bed.
verb and adverbs
The main difference between verbs vs. adverbs is that verbs are action words, and adverbs are description words. Verbs state the action performed by a noun, while adverbs provide more information about how that action is performed.Take the word ‘cool’. In the sentence, “he walks cool”, the word ‘cool’ is an adverb. In the sentence, “cool the hot dish”, the word ‘cool’ is a verb.
My Wonderful Week in Malta!
Kia Ora and welcome back to my blog,
A few weeks ago I arrived in Malta Europe, And for the past few weeks that I’ve been here in Malta I have done a bunch of cool and exciting things. So that’s why I’ve decided to share my week you.
Day 1 Monday 25th July:
On Monday we didn’t really do much, but we still went to a few stores to get some scuba diving masks but it was super fun.
Day 2 Tuesday 26th July:
This time on Tuesday we ended up doing a lot more! Early in the morning we went to the beach with our friends and in was so so so so fun, later on on the day we went snorkelling in the deep sea and the water was super refreshing. After a bit of swimming and snorkelling we went back to the shore and took a quick break for some food and water. For our food we got some really really yummy chips/fries, and after that we were fully energised and full so we went back into the water again. While we were snorkelling we found the coolest thing ever”A BABY STINGRAY”, it was sooooooo cute!
Day 3 Wednesday 27th July:
On Wednesday in the morning we went to a coffee shop called La Crema for breakfast, and then after that we went to bay street which is like a big outdoor shopping mall since we didn’t come home till late we decided to go to Valletta which is also the capital city of Malta for dinner, we ended up going to this really cool pizza place and the pizza there was super delicious. For dessert me and my sister both got an ice cream from this little shop. After we had finished our ice creams we walked around a little bit to see all the lights and because Malta is such a Catholic country there are always so many feast days, and that day there were a bunch of cool lights an flags up there for an upcoming feast there were even some lights that looking like jelly fish they were so cool!!
Day 4 Thursday 28th July:
On Thursday once again we went to the beach but this time I went with my mum’s cousin and my little cousin as well. So early in the morning we all quickly got ready and went to pick up my mums cousin and then after that we were off to the beach but luckily on the way to the beach my sister Mimi spotted a Starbucks so of coarse we had to make a quick stop at STARBUCKS! to get some yummy food and drinks for beach, quite a while later we were once again off to the beach! Finally we were there. Bye the time we had got our Starbucks and arrived at the beach and gotten ready to swim we were all dripping with sweat and were desperate for a swim so we grabbed our stuff and jumped into the water it was so refreshing.
Day 5 Friday 29th July:
On Friday I went out with my mum and sister in the morning to La Crema and I ended up getting an aranchina ball (Like I always do), and after that about 1 hour later we went to Starbucks to get a drink then we set of to bay street, while we were there we went to quite a few different stores like… Lucy’s which is a big make up store, 2 different Terenova’s which is a clothes shop, and lastly Jenifer which is another close store. and finally after that we got some dinner, for dinner I got a piece of pepperoni pizza and for dessert I got rolled ice cream YUM.
The end
I really hope you enjoyed hearing about all of the things I did this week.

my question for you guys is… have you ever travelled overseas before on an air-plane and if you have then how long did it take you and where did you go and if you haven’t then where would you like to go some time in the future
The science behind basketball
For reading this week, I have been looking at the science of basketball. We watched a couple videos and read some texts to gain a new understanding behind the science of basketball.
Three new terms I have learned are:
- If the air molecules/temperature in the ball warms up it will gather energy and bounce higher and if the air molecules are getting colder it will slow down and bounce less.
- Force matters because if you shoot to soft it the ball will fall on the ground without touching the rim and if you shoot it too hard it’s gonna go over the backboard.
- Velocity-speed is needed in basketball because if you pass the ball soft and if goes slow the opponent can steal it mid air.
Here is my create: Custom Shoes
Do you play basketball?
