Coastal Athletics
We had an awesome day out in the sun for our Coastal Athletics event, with students from Omata and Oakura schools joining us for a full day of competition and fun. Athletes gave it their all in a range of events including 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints, as well as high jump, long jump, discus, and shotput. The weather couldn’t have been better, and the atmosphere was full of encouragement, energy, and great sportsmanship. It was fantastic to see everyone trying their best and supporting one another across all the events. We’re especially proud of the effort and achievements of our CTS Year 7 and 8 students—what a great day to represent our school with pride!

DNA 0r Deoxyribonucleic acid is the genetic material that carries all the instructions needed for a living organism to grow and function.A gene is a specific part of the DNA that controls a certain trait, like eye color.An allele is a version of Gene, and we inherit one from each of our parents. Inheritance is the way genetic information is passed down from parents to offspring,which is often determined by the combination of alleles. Punnett squares are tools used to predict the likelihood of inheriting certain traits from parents based on their genetic make-up.

Traits, which are characteristics, like hair color or height.Natural selection is the process where animals or plants with better traits for survival are more likely to live and reproduce.This leads to the passing on of those traits to the next generation, and helping those traits become more common.Survival is the result of being able to live longer and healthier, thanks to these advantageous traits.Reproduction is the process where the organisms create offspring to ensure their species continues.
CRISPR is a technology that allows scientists to change DNA, and it could have many benefits for humans, especially in medicine and agriculture.
Benefits of CRISPR:
1. Curing Genetic Diseases: CRISPR can be used to fix genes that cause genetic diseases, like sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis. By editing the DNA, CRISPR can potentially cure these diseases, improving people’s health and quality of life.
2. Cancer Treatment: CRISPR can help treat cancer by editing immune cells to make them better at fighting cancer. This could lead to better and more effective treatments for cancer patients.
3. Improving Agriculture: CRISPR can also be used in farming to create crops that are stronger, more resistant to pests, and can grow in tough conditions. This could help solve food shortages and improve food quality, especially in areas affected by climate change.

Is it Mortally Acceptable?
1. Curing Genetic Diseases: Fixing genetic diseases using CRISPR is generally seen as a good thing. If it can help people live healthier lives, it’s considered morally right, as long as it’s safe and tested carefully.
2. Cancer Treatment: Using CRISPR to treat cancer is also seen as a positive use. It could save lives by improving treatments, as long as it’s done safely.
3. Improving Agriculture: Using CRISPR in crops can help feed more people and make food safer, which is also morally good. However, it’s important to make sure the changes to plants don’t harm the environment.
4. Preventing Inherited Diseases (Editing Embryos): Editing genes in embryos (germline editing) is more controversial. While it could prevent serious diseases, some people worry that it could lead to “designer babies” where parents choose traits like intelligence or looks. This is a moral concern because it could create social inequalities. Many people believe this should only be done to prevent serious diseases, and even then, with strict rules and caution.
CRISPR can improve health and food security, but we need to use it responsibly, especially when editing embryos.

Kia ora! Welcome! We are Te Kopa Tūī
We are a class of year 4, 5 and 6 tamariki at Waitara East School in New Zealand.
In our class we like to do mathematics, especially our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. We also do Literacy like Handwriting, word vocabulary and morphology (prefixes, suffixes and root words).
We have Whakaminenga every morning to start our day off positively, then we go outside to do fitness to help us to improve our focus and memory and it is good for our mental health. We love to do Jump Jam when it is raining. We also love to play sport like netball, soccer, league, rugby and basketball. We also love to play a game on Friday afternoons.

Māori Film Festival
On Friday myself and Year 5s were lucky to go to the Māori Film Festival at Ngā Purapura. Lots of schools from all over Ōtaki were there to watch Shrek in Te Reo Māori. First we headed off on the bus on a beautiful sunny Ōtaki morning. The bus was pretty noisy with all the excitement! For many students it was their first time at Ngā Purapura.


Next we all piled into the makeshift movie theatre and we learnt a song that we would sing to the cast as they came into the theatre. It was a bit tricky but we all tried really hard. Then the cast arrived and they enjoyed our singing. They sat on the small stage and were asked some questions by some students. They were all super funny!

After that the lights went down and the movie started. Everyone liked the music and sang along. The movie went for a long time but the audience all seemed to really enjoy it. Harata wished we had popcorn. Finally when it was over we headed out into the pouring rain to catch our bus back to school.
