Weeks 8 and 9

As you can probably tell, we’ve been busy preparing reports to go home this week, hence the late entry for Week 8! There are still a few reports to be handed out on Monday for those who weren’t at school to receive them today. I am looking forward to meeting Whanau at our Student Led Conferences on Thursday next week. I know your tamariki are really excited to show you all the hard work they’ve been doing in the school garden.

The Matariki disco was definitely a highlight of Week 9. It was so good to see everyone enjoying themselves with such huge smiles on their faces. We checked on our recycled paper that we were working on last week. It’s nice and dry and resembles the cardboard that egg cartons are made from. We’re very proud of our efforts!

Last week, Tama went home with Azyla, and this week, he has gone home with Bob for the weekend. Well done to both of you for demonstrating our school values!

Guess who got Tama this week!

Talofa lava. We have been celebrating Samoan Language this week with a special assembly. Students from Manurewa High School visited and entertained us with their amazing Samoan singing and dancing.

Tuesday afternoons are our Library Session. We enjoy taking the time to look through the bookshelves and play some of the games in our school library.

The highlight of our week was our trip to the Auckland Museum at the end of the week. We learned about Mātariki inn the Education Centre and explored the rest of the museum. Thank you to Raeesah’s Dad, Aerhyl’s Mum, and Adisree’s Grandad, who supported our students on the trip. We arrived at school too late for Tama to go home with a student so…

…this week Tama was awarded to…WHAEA ANGELA! He’ll be spending a busy long weekend looking after Whaea Charlie’s baby, Eramiha.

Introducing…

We are so lucky in Room 22 to have Matua Ravneel Gounder joining us for a few weeks for his teaching practicum. Matua Ravneel is a keen soccer player and has quickly become part of our whānau. We are really enjoying having him in our classroom.

For our Mitey lessons, we have been learning about recognising emotions through body language. This aligns really well with our Inquiry learning about the brain, as the brain controls our bodies and emotions.

Every second Friday we have Garden to Table with Matua Levi and Whaea Stepanie from Manurewa High School. This week we were able to go next door to Manurewa High School to visit their māra (garden). We saw that the seeds we had planted had grown into seedlings and were ready to plant. We also harvested Jerusalem Artichokes to plant in our own garden. Then we worked hard in the afternoon, digging our new garden bed and planting. We were all very tired by home time!

And this week’s Tama recipient was Fateh! Have a great weekend with Tama, Fateh. We’re all looking forward to hearing about his weekend with you when he comes back to school on Monday.

Term 2, Week 3

This week we’ve been learning about Measurement in Maths. We’re still very excited about our garden that we began planting last week, so we decided to measure it along the length. We used non-standard measurement to begin with, such as arm lengths and…children! Waka Ahukura hosted this week’s assembly on Thursday, where we performed the waita, “Rona”

This weekend, Tama has gone home with Nur Raisya. Well done! We know that Tama will have a great weekend with your family.

Term 2, Weeks 1 & 2

Welcome back to school Room 22. We are so lucky to have been chosen to take part in the “Garden to Table” program. Matua Levi and Whaea Stephanie, from Manurewa High School, have been working with us to help us set up a garden for our kura. We are going to grow all sorts of amazing things we can eat, and have already planted hundreds of seeds. Keep watching to see how our garden grows!

Last week we were learning all about ANZAC day. We got busy making a wall display and made poppies, used pastels to create a sunset scene, and painted a background for our poppies.  We wrote acrostic poems and learned more in our reading.

We also had a special lesson about what to do in an emergency to keep ourselves safe. This could include an earthquake, tsunami, or fire.

Finally, well done to Raeesah, who was awarded Tama last week.

Week 7 and 8

Swimming lessons have now finished and we have all been busy practicing for our Aroha Festival performances on Tuesday 31st March. Last week we all worked together to create a “village”. This turned out to be a lesson about not jumping to conclusions or judging others before we know the facts. We were all highly engaged and worked tirelessly on the project.

In Maths we’ve been learning about Geometry shapes and orientation, such as translation, reflection, and rotation.  We used our carpet tiles to demonstrate translation and rotation by having Leighton give commands to our “robot”, Jasmine, to navigate her way to Aerhyl on the otherside of the room by using only Mathematical language related to Orientation. We continued learning about this topic in our Art by positioning a koru on our paper to show the orientation.

Congratulations to Soraya, who won Tama for Week 8, and to Kairo, who has taken Tama home for the weekend after Week 8. We know that your families will be feeling so proud of you both.
