We are very lucky tamariki to have a new climbing frame at our school. We made a card for the Kaniere School Board of Trustees to thank them for giving us the climbing frame. We will get hours and hours of playing time on this throughout our learning years at Kaniere School. Weka Iti was really excited when it was our turn to first have a play on it.

Favourite Shortcut
Kia ora bloggers!!!
I recently asked the class to share their favourite shortcut so I thought it only fair that I share mine. My favourite shortcut helps me to make ‘macrons’. A macron is the line you see above vowels to indicate that the vowel has a long vowel sound. This is very useful because I’m making a big effort to use more Māori words.
All you do is hold the letter down and a menu appears.

Then you select the mark you want. These marks are called diacritical marks. This link will explain more about them. They are used in lots of different languages.
I used to find the words with the macrons on the internet and copy and paste them into my document. Often I’d have to change the size and font as well so this is a big timesaver! Thank you Basma for showing this to me.
I hope this is useful to you someday. Please share your favourite shortcut.

Waka – T1 W10
Introduction
Hello everyone, my class, AKA JRD, watched a movie called “Moana”. We didn’t watch it just for fun, we watched it because we needed to make wakas of our own. Week 9 at Wednesday, we made wakas, my group, Widad, Bettina and me, built a waka that looked a bit similar to Moana’s big boat. I’ll be showing you a photo of the waka my group and I made.

As you can see, it has railings and a little shelter along with a pointed-deck at the end. This project only took less than a day to finish, because my team and I worked together as a pro. We handled this very easily and not difficult at all, the materials were great, and the whole boat itself.
The rails were the hardest thing to work and build on for the fact Widad and Bettina had a hard time measuring the toothpicks for it to be equal and to cut. The hot-glue was very messy and hard to put on the end of the toothpicks because the toothpicks are very thin.
Materials
- Toothpicks
- Popsicle sticks (Big ones for the base)
- Popsicle sticks (Normal sized)
- Popsicle sticks (Smaller than average)
- Paper (There was no fabric)
- Straws
- Thin cardboard
- Hot glue gun
Conclusion
Although it’s finished, it’s very empty in the middle, it was fun to make though! We would’ve done better if we gotten enough time depending on the events that happened on Wednesday.
I am writing this on Sunday, 31st of March. Sorry for late posts, I have been doing a lot of work around the house and going to training and somewhere like that. This is the end of my boat making post, I might update it if I get told (Probably when I’m 50 something years old) Anyways bye! (This is rushed
)
Waka Hourua -Social Science T1
Hello bloggers!
This week for social science we got to do a project! We got to make a Waka with Popsicle sticks, and tiny ones! Everyone was so creative. We glued on the Popsicle sticks my hot glue. We had a choice of big Popsicle sticks or little, everybody used a bit of both! Some people burnt their hand.. but our teacher told us if that happens go and put some cold water on it. I burnt my hand, it stung for a while but it got better! We got to work in groups, I was with Reine and Patrizia!
WHAT IS A WAKA
Wakas are built from tree trunks, it is a Maori word for Canoe. There were different types of Wakas back in the days like, Waka Hourua, waka pūhara, waka rimu, waka pahī, and waka rā! We had to build a Waka Hourua as we are researching migration!

Health & Safety
Health & Safety
Explain in your words what this looks like in our food room.
Health and Safety in our food room is something we put effort into. Led by our teacher, we prioritise the well being of everybody inside the room. Every time we entered the food room, it was shining clean to the point where you can see your own reflection in the counters ,thanks to the previous responsible students who used it, but as you know, there’s no use even your surrounding is clean when you yourself carries the germs with you. That’s when our hygiene steps in. Before entering the food room, we always make sure to take off the things that would hold us back in cooking and the stuff that may carry germs in them such as jackets, cardigans and accessories. Along with these, we still need to make sure our bodies are clean. People who have long hair tie them up, each individual washes their hands and puts our aprons on. Our part does not end here, but I wanted to mention that most of the safety and health related things in the food room rely on our teacher. By making sure the foods are stored correctly, equipments are clean and safe to use. Once inside the room, we are expected to do things accordingly by how they are tasked and proceed to do what the recipe contains. By doing these steps in order, we avoid having ruckus inside the food room and have a great time cooking at the same time.
Why is it important – How can this impact us from a personal level?community level.
Keeping the food room safe makes our cooking experience more enjoyable and comfortable. Just imagine doing something you like in a clean and safe place, surely you would always look forward to attending this class every week. With health and safety prioritize in a place, there would be fewer accidents and illnesses that would lead to healthier people, they would feel more free and confident in their surroundings and would be more likely to interact with everyone.
Name for me 3 high risk foods we have used in the last 2 practical – how do we store them to ensure they are safe to eat?
Chicken– To ensure our chicken is safe to eat, we should store it in the refrigerator at 40F (4C) or below. It is advisable to store the raw chicken in a plastic bag or container in the lower part of the refrigerator to prevent juices from dripping onto the other foods inside the fridge.
Mayo– To ensure that mayonnaise is safe to use, it should be stored in the fridge at all times. It should also stay in its original container to maintain its quality and avoid contamination so it’s important to always check the seal if it’s closed properly.
Rice when cooked– To ensure that cooked rice is safe to consume, it should be stored in a shallow container to prevent bacteria growth. This then should be kept inside the fridge. When reheating rice, make sure that its steaming hot before you take out the heat to kill any bacteria that possibly stayed on it.

24. Easter – Thank You Letter KPMG; Canva
Kia Ora everyone! Recently, we were given Easter eggs from KPMG. I just wanted to share my gratitude, and my “thank you letter” design that I’ve written for them. In particular, I also want to share this sensational website called Canva. Canva is a website where you can learn, create, and share your big ideas and unique designs. I use this website whenever it comes to design making. The website is free, but some of the items do require payments, or subscriptions. However I do appreciate the quality of the website. KPMG, their kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness sends me over the moon. We are very privileged, and fortunate to receive amazing gifts from them. Which brings me to the main point, KPMG is wonderful, and I thank them for all the miracles they’ve executed for Edmund Hillary School. Here is my thank you letter!
Thank You KPMG!

“Dear KPMG, I sincerely thank you for all the wonders you’ve done for Edmund Hillary school, and I also want to express my gratitude for the gifts you’ve given us too. This letter is a small token of my respect and serves as a reminder of the thoughtfulness and generosity you’ve provided for us. I also want to say that your will to help our school, and to help other schools is absolutely lovely. I appreciate all your hard work behind the scenes, and hope that you continue to strive in the future. Once
again, thank you so much for your help,
and I wish you all a happy Easter! – Sincerely, Teegan.”
Wondering how I created such a lovely, eye-catching design? Buckle up, because I’m going to tell you all the mysteries and secrets. I tend to search some things up for some inspiration, and use keywords such as “Easter”, “Holidays” etc. When I’m satisfied with what I found, I use it as a reference. In particular, I used a template. The template did require money, but it was free to use in general. You aren’t allowed to download things that have premium features, but you can use it, screenshot it and save it in your files. There are many things you can do on canva, but my design was really simple and easy to construct. I hope you found my post interesting, and maybe a little helpful. The activity was really fun, and I enjoyed the process along with my friends. Do you have a role model that you look up to? If so, would you write a letter for them? How would you put “Canva” to use? Share me your thoughts!
24. Mozart – Sir Edmund Hillary; Google Drawings
Kia Ora everyone! Recently with Matua Aina, we created a Mozart design revolving around Sir Edmund Hillary. As instructed, everyone collectively used ‘google drawings’ in order to create their designs. There were many steps that we went through, which I personally found very simple and constructive. Since it’s nearly the end of the term, we are focusing more on our school core values; such as the first person in New Zealand who reached the very top of Mount Everest, Edmund Hillary. (Ancestral/School hero) Towering 29,035 feet high, it is on top of the world. It was on May the twenty ninth, 11:30 a.m. “In 1953, Edmund Hillary and his Nepalese Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, made history, becoming the first climbers to conquer Mount Everest, as seen in the “National Geographic” documentary “Surviving Everest.” It took 16 days via the southeast ridge route.” Says an article I found online. I find it very impressive how he put in all the time, and effort to climb Mount Everest. Here is my google drawing design.
Create your google drawing, and make sure everything is blank. Name your untitled google drawing your room number, (e.g Room 11) then “Ancestral/School Hero”, and make sure to add your name. Go to “file”, scroll down and select “page setup”, then choose “widescreen 16:9”. This allows you to have a bigger page to work on. You want to click the text box, and make sure there are two duplicates. Border line (optional but needed) 4px thick, make one small in the centre and add a bigger box around it. Make sure the small one is layered to the very front so you can edit the text more accurately.
Now for the fun part, search your ancestral hero on google, and put the photo into your google drawing. Go to crop, and choose a circular figure. (To crop your photo into a nice shape.) Now your photo looks more detailed, and defined. Click another text box and put your ancestral hero’s name on it, and drag it right onto your photo, ensuring that it’s sitting at the bottom for a better view of the photo.
Next, you want to click “select line”, scroll down and press “polyline”. Now you want to create shapes that are abstract and artistic. Colour everything in, and you’re done. I suggest using complementary colours, like how blue and orange mesh well together. Hence the reason why I used purple, and yellow. Now you want to add facts about your hero, and many other things. I hope you found this instructive, and helpful. I personally enjoy creating things, especially when it’s art related. The activity was very easy, and fun. Who’s your ancestral hero? Do you have a school value you’d like to share? Would you attempt to climb Mount Everest? Share me your answers!
