Reflection 2.0, because the last one wasn’t good enough and also it wasn’t a reflection

My brother really annoys me. When I’m playing video games online with people he comes up to me and yells inapropriate stuff into my mic so the people I’m playing with can hear him. And this is when he has just came home from a bike ride with his friend so his friend is there too. So really all my brother is, is a big fat show off, like “look at me I can Yell profanities in to my brothers mic and annoy him because ‘he does it to me'”. Which I don’t well I do but it’s only because he does it to me and thats only half of the story there is alot more from where that came from.

Human Rights Events (HRE newspaper headline).

Kia ora this week in Social studies our task was to create a newspaper headline about a human rights event.  My class was given some pointers and question to use and answer in the article eg. How,when, where and why you are writing your story and ideas to make our newspaper article attractive.  This task was quite easy but also hard because I needed to search for a book that contained information I needed and making sure it was presentable. Anyways here is a image of the Matariki stars.

Kia Kaha Buddies

Every Friday we have two year 13 girls named Jayda and Oriwa come into our class and do activity with us. Today we outside to the court and introduced ourselves after that we played bang and bull rush. The games were really fun and at the end they asked us what game we would like to play next and I want to play either doge ball or spaz ball.

When the year 13 wanted our attention they would say 123 and we had to reply with all eyes on me. It made me fell like a little kid

What I enjoyed and not enjoyed this week

This week was very annoying, because one person keeps following where I sit and he keeps kicking me for fun and I don’t like it, wherever I sit he will sit next to me. Our class is good because there are no bad people, only 1-2 people are irresponsible, they go on the wrong thing like games when they lie about it, and the teacher always believes them and not me, even if I’m telling the truth.

A good thing is that we got to do good stuff in science, like balloon experiments and use Bunsen burners to boil water. With the balloon experiment we used less than 20 balloons and flipped a table upside down, and we carried half the class on the table with just using balloons and we also had the heaviest people in our class on it, none of the balloons popped because it was my strategy that made it work. When we boiled water with Bunsen burners, it went to 100° and cooled down very slow, some people had there water beakers black because they used a orange flame, a blue flame is actually 2-3 times hotter than a orange flame, but the orange flame burnt the beakers because it has no oxygen.

In my English class we did a lot of reading and writing, and sometimes I don’t even get to finish it because I always run out of time. My class only has a maximum of 3 to a minimum of 1 period of this class. In year 7/8 you will have the max of 5 and the less of 3. I like my class because my class has almost no bullies at all, and last year I wrote down the people I want to be with and the people I don’t want to be with.

When we do writing work on Chromebooks I always type very fast, But sometimes not get things finished, or if I can’t think of anything to write at all. In writing we have to write at least 4 paragraphs with 4-6 sentences in it. If we are struggling with our writing or work we can ask our teacher for help, But sometimes I can’t. In year 9 we get to pick our options and pick what we want to do and the things we are interested in. I wrote a lot so I’m going to stop right here. Plus no picture.

Comfrey Tea

Comfrey is the bees knees when it comes to organic fertilizer or as Noah put it “Its like steroids for plants”. I read about this wonderous plant last year and brought some to grow in our garden to see if we could reap some of the organic goodness on offer!

Comfrey is a ‘Dynamic Accumulator’ which means it sends its roots deep down into the ground and brings up all the nutrients from down below and stores them in its leaves.

Comfrey also has many medicinal properties and can be used to treat ailments such as sprains, burns, bruises and joint inflammation. I even read somewhere that it was used in medieval times to help with broken bones.

Today our Level 2 Students Noah and Thomas took the first steps in making comfrey tea which we will use to boost our plant growth. Comfrey is especially rich in potassium.

Here is the recipe we used for Comfrey Tea.

  • About 80 Comfrey Leaves ( broken up & put in a bucket )
  • Fill the bucket with water
  • Wait 2 or so weeks ( you will know its ready when it starts to stink)
  • Mix the solution (tea) with water 100ml to 10L
  • Water on your plants

Let me know if you need/want any……. we have heaps!

Human rights event

for the past week we have been writing, planning and choosing what human right event we want to write about for our news paper article. The event I chose was quite recent it has to do with black live matter, I gave the tittle another approach called Protesting for black lives matter. The hard part for about this topic was trying to pick a event to write about. The easy part was just getting stuck into the mahi and really trying and well I finished it within 15 minutes for homework.  My thoughts on this topic  BLM, I feel very sorry for those innocent people for something the cops assumed but didn’t confirm.  A 22 year old was shot more than 20 times because the cops thought he had a gun, body cam showed that it wasn’t a gun but a mobile phone and this 22 years was standing in his grandma’s back yard.

Design from patterns in nature!

Year 11 Environmental Sustainability Management students are currently working on the standard ‘Design a Landscape Plan that reflects user requirements’

We have chosen to redesign the Horticulture block. This kaupapa requires students to think carefully about this environment and landscape. Students will focus on the natural patterns that already exist, for example water flow, shade, light and seasonal change. We will find ways in which we can work in harmony with nature and maximise the production of healthy kai, reduce our waste, create places for learning and reflection as well as places of beauty and peace.

Today we discussed Annuals, Perennials and  Deciduous Trees.

Athletic Day!

Athletics day

I could feel my stomach spin as I started to run to the high jump, I was scared but made it over perfectly! They made it higher every time, Nearly embarrassed cause half of my year wasn’t even joining in. It was currently at 2 meters high, And I was first… Breathing loudly feeling my heart race faster than I ran in the sprints. I ran up to the bar, Lifting my foot far too early. Watching as my food dramatically hits the bar! Pushing me onto it as I try to fly over it! Shutting my eyes and having the pain of the pole land on my back. I could feel my back throb and bruise. I sat up pretending like I’m okay, even though my back was in discomfort.

I could hear the “Ooo..!” of people nearby feeling my pain.

But In the end, I came 4th place!

We have finished and now it’s lunchtime! I could smell my raro packets from a mile away. I tried to put some in my drink but didn’t have enough to add a heap of flavor, I felt so worn out and also having the hot sun sizzle my neck and face. So I sat down and had a break.

Verner the Learner

We have some exceptional students at Bay of Islands College and I am continually impressed by the positive attitude,  good nature and hard work that they put in to life at school. Last week I put the word out that I was looking for a bit of help with some mahi in the garden, specifically clearing out the area where the new shade house will be going. Due to the hectic schedule of a school week , Saturday was the only day which I had time to do this job. I asked around if any students were available to help out. Being the weekend I was not very optimistic, until I asked Verner who said he was keen!

True to his word, Verna arrived at 9.30am on the dot and ready to work! We smashed out about 2.5 hours of hard graft to get the job done and the site ready for the wood work students to start on the shade house. This is a very big step forward for Environmental Sustainability Management at Bay College. Verner is a bright student with a very big future ahead of him !

Thanks for your help!

Mow Town

This week ESM champion and resident American Jasper tried mowing the lawns for the very first time. Growing up in the desert of Nevada and living on a boat in Russel he has never had the opportunity to participate in this most kiwi of traditions, mowing the lawns. He was working towards 5 NCEA credits in Garden Maintenance.

In this lesson Jasper also got introduced to the other great kiwi tradition commonly known as ‘The Stitch Up’ being a novice to lawn maintenance, his mates Andrew and Christian ( who tell me they have been mowing the lawn for years!!!) had Jasper start in the long grass, on a low setting, with the catcher on……classic!

Ka pai e hoa! Keep up the Good work!

What’s growing on?

The new shade house is seeing a lot of activity these days with our level one students learning the basics of plant propagation techniques. Over the last 2 weeks we have been growing seeds in seed trays, choosing the vegetables suitable for this time of the year. This was the first opportunity we have had to prick out seedlings and pot them into bigger containers, for a few students this was the first time that ever tried this technique!. Itwas great to see students getting their hands dirty and taking the first step of growing their own fresh healthy Kai. There is still a lot of work to be done to get this garden growing, so far we are really happy with the awesome start progress this class is making to be coming more environmentally sustainable! Kapai!
