Our Story

Saint  Francis of Assisi, was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernadone on October 3rd in Italy. When he was young he wanted to be a knight with shining armor. His father was a rich cloth merchant, but after time in  prison he realised that money cannot bring happiness. He threw his rich clothes away and started feeding the poor. He wanted peace with friendship, instead of war with swords. He is the Saint of Peace and Harmony.

Bug Treasure Hunt – Step it up

LI : Discover facts about the bugs you have hunted!

For this weeks SLJ I created a poster to show at least 5  facts each about the bugs you pick and what they can do and show what their daily routine is everyday so basically like their natural habitat. One interesting thing I learnt about this task is that a pray mantis can rotate their head 180 degrees for a better view of anything that comes near, I really enjoyed this task because it helps me learn about bugs and their special features.

Summer Learning Journey – Bug Treasure – Step It Up

Todays journey for the Summer Learning Journey was to find the insects in your house or outside your house and write some interesting facts below them. I found this task very interesting and fun because I found out that I have more insects outside my house then I thought I would.

This task took time only because it was hard finding little insects around your house. I found more then four insects but I decided to choose these four only because I thought that it has very good information about these four insects.

Overall this task was very fun and takes time and I would reccommend doing another activity like this again.

Summer Learning Journey | Step It Up | Te Reo Maori

Hey bloggers!

For our task today, we had to come up with a “what if” story about the birds in the forest. We had to imagine a different bird coming down to the ground, or maybe Kiwi coming up with a different plan so he could still fly! My imagination was the limit, so here is the story I wrote.

The Great Bug Battle

One day, the Forest King looked down and saw that the ground was covered in creepy-crawly bugs that were eating all the tree roots. He needed a bird to go down and live on the floor to save the forest.

But instead of Kiwi, the Pukeko stepped forward! “I have big feet and long legs,” Pukeko said. “I can stomp the bugs and keep the forest safe.”

But Kiwi didn’t want to just watch. He had a different plan! He didn’t want to lose his wings, so he invented “The Flying Patrol.”

Kiwi used his long beak like a spear. He would fly high up into the clouds, then tuck his wings in and zoom down like a fluffy rocket! He was so fast that the bugs didn’t even see him coming. He would snatch up a bug, flap his wings at the last second, and soar back up into the trees.

Because Pukeko was stomping on the ground and Kiwi was zooming from the sky, the bugs got scared and ran away forever.

The Forest King was so happy. He told Kiwi, “Since you found a way to save the trees and keep flying, you can keep your beautiful wings forever.”

Now, Kiwi is the king of the night sky. He still has his long beak for snacks, but at night, he does loop-the-loops around the moon because he is the best flyer in the whole world.

Reflection:

I really liked writing this story because it was fun to think about Kiwi still flying. I love birds and I think everyone should get to fly if they want to! It was hard to think of a different plan at first, but then I thought, “What if he was super fast like a jet?” and that made it really easy to write. I hope you liked my story!

SLJ 2026 Bug Treasure Hunt – Step It Up

Today, I completed the last Summer Learning Journey task for this year. I feel very proud of myself because this is the first time ever, out of the 4 years I done it that I completed every single task this year. This is my badge board for the end of the Summer Learning Journey this year.

For this task, I used the photos from the Kick Start activity, and wrote facts about the bugs I found. I found some fun facts over the internet and put it in the template with the photos. These facts included each and every bug species I can find. I am sorry to say RIP to them in my chicken’s tummy. This is my mostly devoured work.

How do you feel when you achieve something you never done before?

SLJ 2026 Bug Treasure Hunt – Kick Start

Today, I completed yesterday’s second to last activity for the whole Summer Learning Journey this year regarding the Critter and Creatures theme. This task is about hunting for bugs around my property. I only found a few, but not much because most of them were in my pets’ bellies. I finally managed to find 6 bugs in total with 3 of which were alive and hand fed.

The rule was meant to be leaving the bugs alone because they might bite or sting. One of them was a shell which I left alone and followed the rule.  Another was a dead mosquito which was safe to touch, so I moved it to take a photo. The last I followed this rule was taking a photo of a spider in my bedroom. The 3 unfortunate critters and creatures were caught by me bared handed and hand fed to my very old white hen. She ate them all and found them delicious.

Here are the only bugs I found in my property.

What would you do if you capture them?

Summer Learning Journey – Bug Treasure Hunt – Kick Start

Today’s Summer Learning was very fun and creative because our task was to take photos of bugs around your house or yard. I found this task very interesting because I found out the  different types of creatures or insects that were in my house and yard.

The insects that I found around my house and lawn were months, roly poly bugs, crickets and lastly a ladybug. There were way more than just four insects but I decided to pick these four because I thought that these four were my favourite.

Something that I learnt while doing this Summer Learning Journey task was that the Atlas Moth is the biggest moth holding up to eleven inches ( 30 cm ).

SLJ 2026 Pekapeka Roosting Locally – Step It Up

Today, I completely Thursday’s Step It Up activity with the Pekapeka or the New Zealand’s native bats. For this task, I learnt a little about the Pekapeka and their threat. After learning about mustelids and feral cats being the main predators, I had to design a predator free roosting box for the Pekapeka.

My designing includes a nice high pole under the box to blend in the environment, like tree. The predator guard is a upside down cone that made of extra slippery, anti-grip material so the mustelids and feral cats cannot climb straight up or from the side, and if they try to cling onto the guard, they will slip off and fall. The entrance is under the box but above the predator guard so the Pekapeka can climb naturally and safely into their nest. I also added some bats silhouettes as decoration, identification and some breathing holes. There is an inspection door for the bat keepers or DOC (Department of Conservation) researchers to check.

Here is my design on Canva.

If you are the predator, how will you outsmart this system?
