This Week we had to read a herald article and do a response on it. Here is my response that I did for the herald article also there is a link down below if you want to have a brief scroll through the story and have a quick read.

Title of the text – Whangarei’s lawn mowing Good samaritan found

Summary of the text (4-6 sentences) 

One day a man on his birthday ended up putting a staple in his finger at work. During that day he drove across helping out an elderly with her lawns doing a really good deed. And also from that day there were also a lot of car crashes in that area, that’s when seven sharp interviewed the elderly women and she happened to talk about a man named Nikau Munroe Rawiri. It was only after his partner shared the post stating that it was the perfect way to end his birthday with him mowing the lawns, Nikau Munroe Rawiri and his partner were scrolling on face book that night and Nikau noticed the house, then he listened to the interview and realised she mentioned him about doing a good deed then he says my head was saying go but my heart was saying help out and as he did he became Whangarei’s lawn mowing Good Samaritan. The posts got so many views and he got gazillions of messages and texts flooding his dm’s. He declined an offer from the elderly’s daughter, then he reunited with them and then the daughter presented him with a hamper of pest control products and then seven sharp came down to follow up on their story.

The key idea in the text – SEXY paragraph

I think the key message in this story is we should help those in need. By this I mean never let an elderly or other do something so intense that they struggle, lend a hand and help or at least ask.This is shown by Nikau Munroe Rawiri he helped an elderly Mow her lawns.In my opinion seeing lovely people in my community help people in need just to carry grocery or get them to the car or cross the road is an example of helping in need.

What can we learn from the text?

What I can learn and also what other people can take by this is that to help anyone in need.

 For the past week we have been learning about how to do a reading response at level 1 and also trying to understand short text. We had two forms of short text to choose from and I chose the NZ Herald News Article, I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Nikau Munroe Rawiri is known as a Good Samaritan after mowing Cynthia Browns. He had claimed to have been going to his mothers after mowing the cemetery lawn, to mow hers. He then passed an old lady mowing her own lawn. “I got up the road and was having conflict with myself: my head was saying to go but my heart was saying to go and help her out”. Keep in mind it was a hot day. Brown had told her daughter and she urgently sent out a search for who this man is in giving him a prize for a role at pest control. He ‘graciously declined’ and instead got given a hamper of pest control products. 

The key idea in the text – SEXY paragraph

I think that the key message in the text is you should always help people in need no matter what. By this I mean if you see that someone is in need of help then to man up and help them out. Example of this was when Nikau claimed that his mind was saying no and to carry on, but his heart was telling him to help her, so then he manned up and helped her out. In my own life, I come across times where I see people struggling. I do all that I can to help out, and make it easier for them. 

What can we learn from the text?

We can learn that if you know it is the right thing don’t just observe, be in action and do whatever you can to help. You don’t have to sacrifice your lovely skin getting burnt to help people, helping people could even be just lifting a heavy box. 

 what did I learn that increased my understanding of kiwi culture?

Last week in Te Ngahere we started doing mahi toi. Mahi toi is art and the art we’re learning to do is to draw continuous lines, draw curves, rule straight lines and best of all blend colours. We have started to trace over a design as practise. I did a good job at tracing over the designs and lines, I need to work on making my lines straighter. Once I finished that practise sheet, I was then able to start practising using colors to blend.Here is a photo of my blending. Do you know how to blend?

 What did I learn that increased you understanding of kiwi culture?

I’ve researched about the different types of the kiwi culture, and different views on how different people see kiwi culture and it has increased my understanding of kiwi culture.

What was the most exciting part of kiwi culture?

Learning more about kiwi icons and what the proper meaning of “icons” are. I found out a lot like that  whit taker’s chocolate was a kiwi icon.

How has this helped you to appreciate other culture. identity and heritage? 

From how different they are and different views on how different people take it. Identity is like how different people are in other countries.

 In this unit i learned about New Zealand and bit about its icons and when they came out who made em etc  and we got to learn about a different culture and their traditions think the bit i found the most exiting was the kiwi meal cause we got to choose a kiwi meal from NZ and write the recipe i learnt to appreciate other cultures by learning more about them and stuff yeah 

Recently in social studies we have been focusing on a new unit (Kiwi culture). We’ve been learning about heritage,identity,culture,kiwi icons,New Zealand herald etc.  I’ve learnt about different kiwi icons and different understandings of culture, I’ve also studied about another culture. This unit really increased my knowledge about culture and a better understanding things of my culture. The most exciting part of kiwi culture would be researching another culture for this task I selected Japanese/Japan, I’ve made sentences and answered questions about why I selected this county and some unique things about it.  Thanks to kiwi culture I’ve learnt to appreciate my culture more and respect other cultures as well, Including identifying myself eg. Who and what I am. Anyways this concludes my reflection have a good holiday!

In Te Ngahere we have been doing a thing called the Wonder Project and we got taught how to make mini bottle rockets. My first impression when we got told we were making rockets I wasn’t very keen at first but I truly enjoyed it. Two and a half weeks of non stop trying to make my rocket. My group and I made it and had our first launch, it did not go as we planned. The fins were not on properly, and our nose cone was a little weak. Our second attempt went only a little further than our first but this time all our fins came off and we had to improve it but other than that I learnt a lot and had heaps of fun.

Yesterday in Te Ngahere we have started to write a thank you letter to Gustavo and Troy for taking their time out and coming to join our class to teach us about how rockets are launched. We had to write what we enjoyed and also what we enjoyed in The Wonder Project. I enjoyed launching our rockets because it was so satisfying watching rockets fly up in the air. I also thanked them for being helpful, kind and patient especially when we would sometimes disrespect them. I also liked that they would always encourage us. I just wish they could come back into our class to teach us the next stage in The Wonder Project. Have you checked out my Wonder Project post? Here’s my Thank you letter.

Step 4 Don’t send bad pictures or videos to anyone or you’ll get in trouble Step 5 make sure that your devices are clean and that people can’t steal your information.
