TERM @ WEEK 1-FIRST WORLD WAR MASCOTS

Hello  readers

This week at reading ,we were learning about  New Zealand mascots .Mascots were a symbol for the regiment. They were friends and companions, added humour and fun, and cheered up the soldiers

The soldiers wanted to have animal mascots because they made them feel happy and less lonely. The animals were like friends to them, especially when they were far from home and in difficult times.

This is a mascot profile card  I love doing decoratios and background I hope you like my work please comment

EP Reading work

Hello everyone,

This week we have been learning a lot about mascots and then we had to do this fun to create a task I chose a bulldog because they are strong. We had the option of a Horse, Cat, Dog, Camel, or a Bird I don’t think a Bird would be a good mascot because it might just fly away and you might lose it in war. Have you ever done this activity before? It is really fun because you get to choose your own mascot. If you did this activity what animal would you choose and why? Please leave a comment.

Anzac Day – Make a memorial for the Maori soldiers.

Hello! Welcome back to my blog! In Reading, because it is Anzac Day today, I made a memorial on Google Drawings in honour of the Maori soldiers who served in World War l. Here it is. I made some poppies next to the memorial because they are the national flowers of Anzac Day. I think it looks beautiful. What do you think? PS, Anzac Day stands for: Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

Poster for Maori people to join in WW1

Hello, Readers! This week, we learned about the Maori people who joined WW1. The Maori people were being treated unfairly by the British, so they thought that if we join the war, the Europeans will be nice again! But some of the Maori communities didn’t want to join because why should they fight for a king (King George) who has been sooooo cruel and did nothing about the Europeans stealing their land? So the European Government forced them to join. But they wouldn’t. So they went to prison, poor things. In our create tasks, I chose to make a poster for the Maori people to join the war! I made it bilingual (Maori and English) `because I don’t think Maori people knew how to speak English. Here it is!! I added a bayonet (search it up, it’s a gun) and a Maori solider (His name skipped off my head) and a pounamu named Adze (or Toki) It symbolizes strength and power and is used as a carving tool. So what do you think? And a question: Would you fight in the war is you were forced to fight? Or would you rather go to prison? ANSWER BELOW!

Artemis II: A Moon Mission like no other

Artemis II was NASA’s first crewed Artemis mission and sent four astronauts around the Moon before returning them safely to Earth in April 2026.

The crew were Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Their flight was a major test of the Orion spacecraft and an important step in NASA’s plan to return humans to the Moon and prepare for future missions to Mars.

The mission lasted nearly 10 days and took the astronauts on a huge loop around the Moon rather than landing on it. NASA said the crew completed many important milestones during the trip. One of the most exciting was that Artemis II passed the Apollo 13 record for the farthest crewed spaceflight.

As well as flying far into space, the astronauts tested how Orion worked with people on board. That included checking the spacecraft’s systems for living and working in deep space, and proving that it could protect a crew during the fiery journey back through Earth’s atmosphere. These tests matter because future Artemis missions aim to explore the Moon in greater detail.

The Artemis programme is bigger than one flight. NASA says its goal is to return humans to the Moon, build a long-term presence there and use what is learned to help send people to Mars. Artemis II was a key mission because it showed that astronauts can travel beyond low-Earth orbit in Orion and come back safely. There were many amazing facts about the mission. The astronauts saw the far side of the Moon, travelled hundreds of thousands of miles, and completed a journey that only a small number of humans have ever made. For children reading about space today, Artemis II is a reminder that exploring the Moon is not just part of history. It is happening again now.

Beloved Tiger Bashii Dies at Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo’s Sumatran tiger Bashii has died after being put to sleep on 17 April 2026, when his health became much worse.

Bashii was 18 years old and had been living at the zoo in Wellington. The zoo said he had kidney disease, which is common in older cats. Its veterinary team had been caring for him and helping to manage his symptoms.

After a full examination, the zoo decided that putting Bashii to sleep was the kindest choice because his quality of life had become too poor. Staff said Bashii was a gentle tiger who liked being around his keepers. They said his calm and noble nature would be remembered by everyone at the zoo. Bashii had lived at Wellington Zoo since 2014, when he arrived from Australia Zoo.

The zoo also said Bashii helped teach visitors about the dangers facing wild tigers. He showed people how human actions, such as poaching and cutting down forests, can harm tiger populations. Staff said he inspired people to make better choices, such as buying FSC timber and paper products, which can help protect forests where tigers live. Bashii will be missed by the zoo community, but his work helping people learn about endangered animals will not be forgotten.
