Duke Festival Surfing Day 2026

On Tuesday the 24th of March, the intermediates of our school got to choose to take a day surfing. To begin, for those of us who didn’t know how to surf, we would have to learn the basics. Then we would practice on the sand with what we just learnt to be sure we knew how to surf properly and safely. Lastly, we would have our fun on the waves, get back into our uniform, and head back to school.

First, we got ourselves ready by changing into our swimsuit and swimming gear. Some people like me brought wetsuits to wear. For the people who didn’t bring a wetsuit, they had to wear loan wetsuits that were short sleeved. Then we headed on to recall safety when in the sea.

After some skills and safety measurements on the shore, we got into the water and started riding the waves. It was pretty cool standing up and feeling the wind. As the waves crashed, I sped towards the shore and caught some pretty good waves. That day I had a very fun (and painful) experience.

Along with all the fun, it came with the pain while in the water. I had my toe crash with someone’s surfboard fin. I carried on surfing and bared the pain in the cold sea, but as soon as I got out the water, my toe got so painful and swollen that I could barely walk. That was the most painful experience on that day.

At the end of the lesson, I find myself enjoyed the surfing at the beach. Even with that painful bruise on my toe, I still had a lot of fun. If someone wanted to try it, I would definitely recommend them to giving it a go! Thanks to everyone that helped make this happen, especially our teacher Mr. Gray for taking us there and back.

This is a collage I made using all the photos that our fantastic Mr. Gray took.

Being at a school near the beach gives us lots of really cool seaside opportunities and activities, like surfing. What activities nearby would you like to have at your school?

My time in space🌌

Day one in space: I was one my way to school when randomly two people dressed in black suits and black ties. They tell me they need me for a top secret mission but I tried running away because my mom said don’t talk to strangers but they showed me their badge that they had because they work for NASA  I am 10 years old and I mastered computer science, biolagy, phisics, science and I passed the phisical test and I had perfect scores for about 3-4 years which you need to join NASA and go to the moon so I called my mom and told her she told be no but they said there is a huge pay at least 1.10 million dollars and we really needed it so she agreed.

They took me into there black SUV and told me they only need me to help them find a new planet that we could live in because there is a very dangerous war and food is also running out in the while wide world and there was no one that had better research than me so thats the only reason they choose me. Also the only reason they picked me because the principle is the CEO of NASA and saw how experienced and confident I was and chose me.

They took me to the huge NASA building and told me to gear up they gave me a multi layered spacesuit designed for pressure manegment and mobility, They also gave me a pressurized helmet with a gold coated visor to block unfiltered sunlight and radiation and also a life support system which is a backpack containing oxygen tanks, a carbon dioxide remover machine and water for cooling. They also gave me all sorts of other stuff.

Day two: By the time I was done gearing up it was already day two and they gave a long talk on what to do and what not to do and we were ready for take off we got in to the crew dragon (Space X).Once we launched into space I felt hungry so I asked one of the people I saw and asked I am super hungry and they handed me me some dehydrated hamburger in a pouch and I was confused and they explained in space they couldn’t eat hydrated food escspessily bread.

Day three we were still on the way to the moon and  I had a massive and gross cramp because I need to go number 2 and there is no way to flush the portable toilets so they always bring insects such as fruitflys, cockroaches, beetles and crickets the only reason they bring them in so they and reproduce rapidly and they will reproduce the human waste and use it to plant their plants:

Such as cabbage, carrots, Chinese cabbage and also red chillie peppers and more.

I felt a bit skeptical at first but I didn’t have a choice as my stomach grumbled in pain and then we discovered a planet called “Mars”.

You should know Mars as the planet that nobody thinks their is no chance of survival but in real life I do because you could grow food such as: There is a lot of frozen ice under that you could melt to drink and for fuel, it is not to small it has enough gravity to keep your bones strong and healthy unlike the moon,It is also is cold there but not earth like weather just cooler.

No Dirt is Needed to grow plants space you just need red and blue special LED lights. We would grow plants in water (hydroponics) or mist (aeroponics) inside heated “space greenhouses.”. But their is something that you should know that the soil is toxic so we use a bacteria that will clense the soil and ya.

Day four: you are actaully the one that discovered the fact that you could live in Mars and when they were on their way back with the report I WROTE and was gonna show it to the CEO and my instructor stole all the credit I tried to defend my self and explain that I discovered the hidden life in mars but the CEO didn’t believe me because I was just a smart and ordinary girl and that’s when my 4 days in space was over.

and here is some pictures of the stuff I mentioned:

Tal’s Silver Wings

LI: To structure and write a narrative

For this activity, we were tasked to make a comic strip about “Fly by Night” which is about a baby owl who wants to fly and was written by June Crebbin. We used Gemini to generate images of the baby owl and it’s mother. Then we added some text which describes the settings, where it takes place, what’s the problem, and what’s the solution. Also, we were supposed to record this with the record icon on the Google Slides, but I didn’t because mine was disabled. But anyway, we added some emotion to the story to make it more scenic  like POV which we learned about in class. Also, I found this task really fun. It’s cool when you get images and embed on a Google slides and make it a comic strip.

Catching waves in New Brighton🏄

When you become a year 7 and 8 in NBC, you get the opportunity to go surfing for a day in New Brighton!

When I arrived at school in the morning, excitement was running through the air! Today was the day of surfing! Us year 7 and 8s walked down to New Brighton beach and learnt how to surf. We sat and listened to our 4 instructors teaching us how to surf, safety rules, and to have fun!

We all had our wet suits on looking very funky, and practised surfing on the sand. It was slowly getting hotter, the sun was pushing through. Then we set off into the water. The first wave was so strong, I could tell it was going to be a good day!

I stood up on my surf board, and it felt nice and refreshing. But I got scared at the end, and jumped off.

R.E in term 1♰

This term in R.E, the intermediates have been learning about Sin, Annunciation of Mary, Lent and our Bishop.

Sin⬇

Sin can be done in three different ways, Original Sin, everyone is born with it. Personal Sin, means when you choose to sin and hurt yourself, and sin towards everyone. Social Sin, that’s when you are placed with a group of people that are all Sinning together.

Annunciation of Mary⬇

When we were learning about the Annunciation of Mary, I learnt that Mary and her sister both conceived a baby at the same time, did you know that?

Lent⬇

Lent is the time of preparation for jesus to be condemned to death. We have been learning about what we can do during this time, like giving up something, praying, and giving things like food or your time to others in need.

Our Bishop⬇

This term we were really lucky to see our christchurch bishop at NBC. He came down, and spoke to us about his journey, the Pope, and why he is who he is.

What would you like to learn about out of all four options?

End of the Blog Topic

DNA – is a ladder like structure that contains all the detail in our body. It is found in all living things such as planets, animals, and of course humans. Every individual has their own DNA which is made out of generation of people from the past, which is why DNA is considered to be something unique.

Gene – is a Singular structure which can be found in the whole of a DNA it has instructions for a specific trait, something like the color of the hair.

Alleles – Are very similar to gene but the difference is that an allele is a variation of a gene, something about predetermined what type of trait a person would get from their parents.

Inheritance – is something  you can get from your parents, like money but if we were to use it in a science then it would be about inheriting traits from parents to the next generation.

Punnet Squares – are squares that determine which alleles a baby would have from their parents. There are something called Dominant alleles and Recessive alleles, these two determining whether a baby would look more like the dad or the mom. Dominant alleles shows through even if only a little bit is inherited but recessive alleles only show through if there are two of the same allele.

Kasio – Group 3 Bok Choy Letter

LI : To understand we make judgements based on stereotyping, assumptions and prejudices

We read the text bok choy for reading. This text shows us the prejudices existed towards the Chinese immigrants in early NZ.

It also shows us that it is importantant to be empathy for those who are seen different from us.

Dear Ah-sum,

I, Thank you Ah-sum, for saving me from the river. While everyone was minding their business, you stepped in and risked your life just for me and I appreciate it so much. I also want to thank you for inviting me into your hut and giving me a nice warm tea to heat me up from the chilly freezing river, it made me feel safe and I hope you felt safe too.

I also want to apologize for the way I acted towards william since he was being unkind. The only thing I could do was stand up for myself, I wasnt going to let him do unkind things to me but I am very sorry for not showing enough respect, especially towards you Ah sum.

I am hoping in the future I could do the same for you, I cannot help but thank you for saving me. So someday if you get hurt just know I will always be there for you.

KO WAI AU: TŌKU MOUNGA

We have been learning about kōrero of our own maunga.

What you can see is our fact posters that share kōrero about our maunga.

We created this using Canva.

I am proud of my mahi because I learn’t awesome things about my maunga.

Something I found challenging was finding true and accurate facts about my maunga.

Something I learn’t was how my maunga got its name.

My tips about Canva is to use an existing template for your poster.

Do you know your maunga and how it got its name?

SLJ Certificate

LI: To celebrate our success

Last week, PBS held a special event called the Summer Learning Journey celebration assembly. During this event, Mrs. Grant came and handed out certificates and prizes to everyone who took part. My certificate was just for showing up and participating in the activities. The Summer Learning Journey was really fun because it kept me busy and entertained during the holidays. I didn’t spend all my time feeling bored, and I still learned new things while I was out of school.

My favorite activity was called “Legs Legs Legs – Step It Up.” For this challenge, I made a pretend leg for a dog named Turbo. Turbo was born without two of his front legs, so I designed a fake leg to help him move better. It was a fun project because I got to think about how to help an animal that needs some extra help.

In addition to the fake leg, I also created some other ideas to help Turbo live a better life. One of these was the “Snack Dispenser 5000.” It’s a machine I designed that automatically gives Turbo treats whenever he wants one. That way, Turbo can stay happy and well-fed without someone having to remember to give him snacks all the time.

I also thought about making an “Auto-Cooling System.” This was a device I imagined that would keep Turbo cool and comfortable, especially on hot days. It would help him not to get too warm or tired when the weather is hot.

Another idea I had was called the “Turbo Booster.” It’s a gadget that gives Turbo a quick push or a boost, helping him move faster or get from one place to another more easily.

Overall, the activities I did during the Summer Learning Journey were really interesting. I learned how to come up with creative solutions to help animals like Turbo, and I had a lot of fun building and imagining new devices. It was a great way to spend the holidays, combining learning with fun hands on projects.

Grasshoppers

Today I did some learning about Grasshoppers and other insects.

I find it exciting to do it with my friends, we had to pick one insect from the board and do research about it, I picked Grasshoppers and my friends did too! The reason we like Grasshoppers is because we try to find them at break.

We learnt the other insects names in maori.

Bok choy- group 2

For group two´s reading taske we read the book Bok choy. After we read the book we chattered together in a group about what we assume about the charecters and what we can tell about someones personality or humor. And then we answered the questions about the charecter and what they mean when they say stuff. Ah sum was the main charecter, he saved a little boy from drowning out in the water. Ah sum took the boy to his little hut offered him food and kept him warm. And we used our imagination and pretend we are they little boy and wrote a thank you letter!

Dear Mr Ah sum.

You may not really remember me. So to refresh your memory its me Jacob, the little boy you saved from drowning in the lake. You know i didnt really get to say a proper thank you and it really bugged me. I didnt want u to think i do not appriciate your act of kindness so i wrote this letter to thank u with proper manner. That day i wasnt really sure what i was doing but i remember i was fishing. And suddenly i had slipt and washed over into the lake. To this day i am so grateful that u spotted me from afar. Not only is this a thank you letter i also wanted to say im sincerley sorry for judging you. And being unkind. I guess no one ever knows what goes on behind the covers but yours was rather… Predictable. I mean hey no offence but judging by your hut i can see why you have to go around selling you Bok Choy. Back to the point, i thank you Mr Ah Sum. Really dearly. I thank you very much and i hope that you get the money u need. Thank you..

-Sincerley Jacob

Nano banana

LS2 had created 6 images of a lepoard using nano banana. Nano banana is a type of AI that creates images, we had to use this to try create and image that looks the same as the one we were given. the image that we got was a lepoard laying on a tree branch. We got to put in prompts the match the image. For example “Generate a image of a lepoard laying on a tree branch with flowers in the background”. After we put this prompt in it gave us a image of what we aksed it to give us. We had 6 attempts to try and get the same image our teacher gave us.
