It has been a busy year with Athletics, Cross Country, Film Festival, Fun Day, days at the beach, a trip to the zoo and a Carnival Day. Here is a quick record of some of the things that Room 20 and Room 19 have done over the year.
SLJ Shadow Art Step It Up Extension
Today, I made a sundial and tested it to see whether it works or not. It is Step It Up Extension because it is not a real SLJ activity but it is related to it. It is related to it because in the last activity, it was about creating shadow art where you had to colour the shadow, wait and colour again, as the sun moves across the sky. So a sundial is telling the time through the sun from the direction of the South or North, depending where you are. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you direct from the true North. If you are from the Southern Hemisphere, you direct from the true South. There is a sundial at Botanic Gardens if you want to have a look.
First thing you have to do is to make a Sundial. Print out a template using the latitude in your area or city. The site that I used was called https://www.blocklayer.com/sundial-pop. Cut, fold and glue it. Decorate it if you like.
Time to test! Using a compass, locate your true Direction whether it is South or North, align your Sundial to that direction and the sun shall tell you the time if on a sunny day.
I enjoyed this activity because I love doing fun thing outside with nature especially on sunny days. I also had Tea, my duckling, somewhere on the grass with me.

My Sundial didn’t match the analogue clock because
- a. It is summer time with daylight saving so it is 1 hour faster
- b. Wellington time zone is based on longitude 180˚ East and the Christchurch longitude 172.6˚ East
- c. Our clock has been 5 minutes faster because I don’t want to be late
Did your Sundial work? Why or why not?
Ping Pong Punishment!
Hello everyone reading! Today I did the ping pong battle kick start challenge. I found this task very fun because I got to create my own game with a ping pong. I called it ping pong punishment because in every cup their was a different punishments! I really enjoyed doing this task because I found it fun but challenging because this was the 3rd game I tried! My favourite part was battling with my sister which unfortunately she won! But it was a good game to play on a rainy day like it is here today! What is your favourite thing to do on a rainy day? Next time I think I would add more punishments because today there were only 4 in this game. Please let me know if the links don’t work because i’m not sure if they will. The links are for how to play Ping Pong Punishment, our battle and me designing my game. Thank you for reading, blog to you later!

Shadow Art – SLJ – Kick Start – Step It Up – Blog Number 17
Hello everyone,
Today I did the shadow art outside my house. My mum recorded me doing my shadow art. First i drew the outline of the fern, then i painted the outline and background. Lastly I printed the leaf over that. I did both kick start and step it up for this activity. For the shadow art I painted a fern leaf from the garden. Also for this activity when my mum recorded me she used time lapse. The time lapse is for both the step it up and kick start.
Here is the photo of me holding up the final result of my work.
I can’t forget my awesome video. Here are my videos.

Summer Learning Journey-Shadow Art
The day this Summer Learning Journey activity was released I couldn’t do it outside because it was raining. But the days after, I was finally able to complete it. I thought I should try and find a plant with a butterfly, but I just chose any plant near me. It was kind of hard to trace the shadow of the plant because the wind kept pushing the leaves but I eventually got it. I also traced another plant nearby to make it look less spacious.
I colored the blue plant shadow blue because I thought it would make the picture a bit brighter. But to be honest, I’m not liking the color I chose. I think if I colored both black then it would be pretty cool. It didn’t take me a while to do this but I loved this activity. It reminds me of the time when my sister and I would grab a flashlight, turn off all the lights, and play shadow puppets. I was only able to make a “dog” shadow. I have seen those videos where those people are able to make Gangnam Style.
Have you ever seen people do unique shadows?

Bug of the Year (Kick Start)
For this Summer learning journey activity we had to create a bug using different types of shapes. My bug was based of a caterpillar, I used a oval for the body a circle for the eyes and head, then used curved parts for the legs and antenna. This task was easy and fun to do.

Under The Sea Robot – step It Up
Is my under the sea robot Summer Learning journey task. I hope to see something like it in the future that can help save the coral in the ocean as the coral provides homes, protection and food for sea life.
The grey hand plants ocean plants to give the fish somewhere to hide, live and protection. The top of the robot collects water samples to be tested in the lab later. The yellow hand cleans the coral that is dying to try protect it and also allows the fish to eat what it rubs off.
Rebus Puzzle: Step it up (SLJ)
As part of the Summer Learning Journey, I have created this Rebus Puzzle Activity. For this, I first had to watch a video to solve puzzles before the timer ran out. Some of them were tricky and some of them were easier. Secondly, I had to solve some Emoji Rebus Puzzles myself. They are quite fun. And lastly, I had to create my own Rebus Puzzles for you to work out. Look on the slides below, and try to work out all of the Puzzles (the slide also tells you how to do them if you don’t know how). Good luck solving! Tell me in the comments if you managed to solve any!:

Spongebob’s Under The Sea Adventure!
Hey blog readers, today I did the under the sea kick start task. I choose the turtle aas one of my sea creatures because I think turtles a very fascinating creatures and i’ve always wanted to swim with one and I choose the tingray because I the they are very cool and big animals. On our family trip to Australia we got to pat stingrays at sea world and they LOVED pats! I also choose Spongebob because under the sea reminded me of him so I thought he could also be in my animation. My favourite part was deciding what was going to happen so I could move my characters so it would come together. Next time I think I would use different sea creatures. I personally love going swimming I think it is so fun! Where’s your favourite place to go swimming? Thanks for reading todays blog post, I’ll blog to you later!

Sea Adventures
Hi Blog Readers.
Today I tried the Under The Sea animation. I found this activity super fun. My favourite part about doing this activity was getting to choose the animals. The animals I used were an Octopus and a Crab. Did you know that there are more than 4,500 species of Crabs? I decided not to put an ending to my animation because I thought that it would be fun to see what ideas for an ending you guys can come up with in the comments. Let me know what ideas for an ending you came up with…
What’s your favourite sea creature?
Make sure you check out the Summer Learning Journey Blog.
