We have been learning how to make inferences using clues from the text to help us. We also looked for key words or repeated words and phrases. This was tricky for some of us as we had to look deep into the text and really try to explain WHY we thought what we thought.

This term we started with a BANG and have been learning how to meet and greet in TE REO and in NZSL. We are amazing!

We also used the NZSL dictionary which has an image of the sign, the English and Te Reo translations and a helpful video showing us the sign in action.

We have created slides so that we can buddy up with our junior classes and teach them some simple signs.

We are also working on learning helpful phrases for items in our akomanga (classroom).

On Wednesday, our class Ruma Whitu went to the library to learn about Anzac day. ANZAC day is to remember the men that went to war. 

Mrs Mears taught us about the different men that went to war, the jobs they did before and after they went and what happened during the war. We were told to sit on the mat and then she told us that we were going to do little skits to show what the men did in the war. At the end we were going to perform them in front of Ruma Rima and Waru. They also performed in front of us as well.people did little skits for us to watch and all together it was the story of the war and the men.  

One of the Play’s: a mother of the family that was worried because her son was going to war. The dad was Liam and he was the one that showed the mum and the two cute little girls that the oldest son Leo was going to war, Jayla and Caitlin were the two little cute girls.

This year we have been given a reading challenge to do.  The purpose of the challenge is mainly to increase our reading mileage. We also want to learn how to read smoother and faster and spell and pronounce words better.  

The challenge is that some reading groups have to read a wide variety of books over the year (see 40 book requirements below) and others have to aim to read twenty books.  For every book we read we complete a blog post to share with our reading audience. We also earn $$$$ on banqer! 

So far we, all together have read forty–one books and we are going to get to the goal we have been set to reach.

Every year Karoro School is lucky enough to participate in the West Coast Top Team Games which makes us work together to solve problems.

In each class everyone is put into teams of about 6-7 people per team and the teachers choose where you start then you go around the stations. After each station you will be given a number of points and whoever gets the most points wins. One junior team wins as well as one senior team win. 

In the top team games there are normally 2 water games with 7 other stations that are meant to be dry (but end up soaked because they come from wet activities).

The most exciting activity was the burst pipe where you had to block up the holes while somebody filled the pipe up. It was great because it was a really hot day and we got soaked.

Lucky for us it was really fun and we learnt how to work together as a team, while having fun. We all enjoyed every second of it.

Why we learned about the parts of the brain

We were learning about the brain with Harold because we had to understand the meanings of each name and what they are used for. We learned that every single bit of our brain is very Important because each bit has a different Knowledge.The left side of the brain part controls your speech and your writing,The right side our brain piece controls our movement, ability, creativity and the ability to listen! We even scanned a person in my class’s head to look at her brain.

All of the different parts of the brain 

1. The brainstem connects the brain to the body to help you walk and run.
2. The hippocampus helps you to remember all the things that we learn to do.
3. Cerebellum another name for the cerebellum is the little brain and it is used for coordination

Session review

Monday’s session was just about learning about how the parts work and what they do for you. We also did a brain puzzle and all the pieces were different colors and at the end I got to choose what color the lights were for when we were meant to be silent. 

Wednesday review – this was our last session of the year so we did the most important thing’s like watch a video and learn about what happens in our heads.

We were learning about water safety so we can be safe around the water and the others as well. We learned this so if we are around water then we will be safe when we’re out in the water. We’ll help others be safe when they’re out in the water so no doctors are going to help us now because we will know the rules. We all found it pretty fun to learn about water safety.

 Water safety rules

1. Do not swim in the water when it’s dirty because it’s bad for people and you can’t see what’s under there. There might be a stick poking out and if you jump in then you will hurt yourself and have to go to the doctor. 
2. Never swim alone at a river,lake,lagoon,or creek. (if it’s deep enough)or a beach because you might drown
3. When you are at the beach and you see a lifeguard and you see there is a sight then go and look at it to see what is wrong and learn the rules.
4. If you see red and yellow flags then swim in between them at all times.

Out in the sun rules

When you are out in the sun you don’t just put sunblock on when you just go swimming you have to put it on every time you have to go outside so wear sunblock on all times when in sun.

We went to Arthur Fong Park on the Bus but then he dropped us off somewhere else so we had to walk. He was late as well to pick us up.

There were four different teams in the cricket tournament from karoro school. There were two different teams that were playing hardball. The people in those team’s were either year sevens or year eights. My team was a softball team and it was also an all girl team. My team only versed all boy teams. The other Team was a mixed team. For the hardball games There was one all boy team and one all girl team. 

When we arrived at school that day we did work in the morning until nine thirty then we had to pack up and go down the hill with room eight, so we could wait for the bus driver to turn up. When we got back to school from Cricket we arrived at about two forty so all we could do was play a game and pack up, also talk about cricket.

Each game went for about an hour and you had a turn at both batting and fielding and when your team was batting there would be two people in the field and the rest on the sidelines waiting for their turn.Some were nice, some weren’t. One team versus Paroa twice( They were different Paroa teams ) and Westland High. And one of the other teams versed Paroa and Greymain. There were quite a lot of teams so you didn’t verse anyone twice.

Last week the Year 6’s had a huge discussion around social media. We made a list of positive and negative answers to the question:

Is social media healthy for children?

This is their first draft so there will be some errors. The green ticks are their self assessment.

Last week Carson, Jacob and Hunter travelled to the local chess tournament. What a success! Carson was the top player for all the Year 5 and 6 rookies. Hunter and Jacob’s overall team made it into the top 4 and Jacob won the top player for all the Year 7 and 8’s.

We are so proud of them!
