Subtraction A

Task Description: Today I am learning about Subtraction. Subtraction helps me learn and take away numbers. So Miss Tumahai (My maths teacher) told us to do our maths tasks. She cast her screen to the TV so that the kids could see what they are doing. So Now I’m up to my second math task!

Please leave a positive, thoughtful and helpful comment on my blog.

Monster Vocabulary

Today in our reading group, we explored the world of monsters with the text “Monsters” by Tricia Glensor. We learned about different monsters from various cultures, like the Kāhui Tipua from Aotearoa and the bunyip from Australia, and how these creatures show the fears and beliefs of their cultures.

To start, we made a vocabulary chart to define new words from the text, helping us understand the stories better.

For our follow-up task, we became monster critics. We each picked a monster and wrote a review from the point of view of a character who encounters that monster. We described the monster, supported our ideas with evidence from the text, and explained how the point of view influenced how readers feel about the monster.

Tsunamis/2011 Japan tsunami/earthquakes || Social Studies

Hello readers today I will be telling you about tsunamis that I learnt about in social studies.

They call Japan the “Ring of fire” because Japan is a country in Asia and near the Pacific ocean, and that makes it close to a place called the “Ring of Fire” so that’s why people call Japan the Ring of fire.

I learnt that the main cause of tsunamis is earthquakes, it starts off when the tectonic plates shift and it push large amounts of water and that starts to create waves that spread out.

Japan had around 1’500 earthquakes a year, around 20,000 people were dead or missing and close to 500,000 people were forced to evacuate.  In July 2011, the Japanese government set a 10-year timeline for recovery with specific targets.

Tsunamis are waves caused by disruptions such as earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions under the sea that displace water.  The tallest tsunami waves were caused by a Japan earthquake that was estimated to be as high as a 12-story building.

I found it pretty interesting that Japan has that much earthquakes every year, I also found that around 20,00o people went dead or missing I found that pretty interesting and disturbing, what was also pretty interesting was that the tallest tsunami was as high as a 12 story building.

I found basically all of it interesting so I didn’t really find any of it not interesting because most of it was pretty interesting.

Anyways that it byebyeeee.

Pp is for pigs

This week we have been finding different words in our environment that start with the letter Pp.  We took our class iPad on our daily walks and all the children found different plants to take photos of.

We also listened to stories and songs about pigs.  Our favourite rhyme/poem was ‘This Little Piggie Went to Market.’  The children all enjoyed the actions to follow this rhyme and giggled when tickled.

For our Community Outing we visited the zoo where we found two kunekune pigs and then had a wonderful time on the playground.  Again all the children practised the skill of taking a photo on the iPad of the pigs.

We hope you enjoy seeing the photos below of our pig creations.

Empathy and Kindness

(Kindness and empathy)

(Kindness) : Kindness is a thing like helping people Not getting into fights and just becoming friends with them instead And instead of not helping yourself…Help others Waste your time just for the people especially if there new to school.

(Empathy) :

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It goes beyond mere sympathy, which is feeling pity for someone’s situation. Empathy involves recognizing emotions, putting oneself in someone else’s shoes, and responding with compassion.

There are two main types of empathy: cognitive empathy, which is the ability to understand someone else’s perspective intellectually, and affective empathy, which is the ability to physically feel what another person is feeling. Both forms are essential for effective communication and building strong relationships.

Kindness and empathy

Kindness and empathy are both essential traits that enhance our relationships and communities, but they serve different purposes.

Kindness involves actions that show care and consideration for others. It can be as simple as offering a smile, helping someone in need, or giving a compliment. Kindness often focuses on making someone feel good or supported, regardless of the deeper understanding of their feelings or circumstances.

Empathy, on the other hand, is about understanding and sharing the feelings of others. It requires a deeper emotional connection, allowing us to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and recognize their experiences and emotions. When we practice empathy, we listen actively and respond with compassion, often validating the other person’s feelings.

While kindness can be shown without fully grasping another’s situation, empathy demands a more profound level of engagement. For example, someone might be kind by donating to a charity, while empathy might involve volunteering and connecting with the people that charity serves.

In essence, kindness is about actions that promote goodwill, while empathy is about the emotional understanding that underpins those actions. Both are vital in fostering supportive and compassionate communities.
