Today we had our first ICF session with Whaea Natalie from Manaiakalani! It was amazing! Our students learnt how to navigate Google Slides, bookmark, use our class site and some even started their first blog posts!
Thank you Whaea Natalie for being patient and supporting our tamaiti in today’s session!
Welcome back everyone to a wonderful year of learning. I am delighted to be teaching Year 4 this year. We’ve had a full on start to the year with all our core subjects and swimming lessons in full swing. Being in a collaborative pod space in our new building, means that we get to enjoy the company of other classes for sports activities and we get to know all the other teachers in our area. We also enjoyed a special Duffy assembly this week, which left us thinking about how reading books is still a valuable skill, despite all the technology we use.
Thank you to all the whānau who joined us for our picnic last Wednesday. It was a pleasure to see familiar faces and meet with some new parents as well. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone at our Student Led Conferences next week, where you will be able to see your children’s work and talk about their goals for this year.
Tama, our class trophy has already spent the weekend with two students so far. Shazneen was awarded Tama in Week 1 and Rishan took Tama home in Week 2. Congratulations Shazneen and Rishan. You have both been amazing learners in Room 22. And thank you to Shazneen’s dad for making Tama such a smart outfit.
Welcome to Term 1! My name is Mrs Virk, and I am so excited to be your child’s Room 6 teacher for 2026. Week 1 has been a wonderful start, full of smiles, confidence, and curiosity as I got to know our amazing learners.
Our tamariki began the term with confidence, introducing themselves and learning about one another. We spent time working on our “All About Me” writing, where students shared who they are, what they love, and what makes them special. It was lovely to see their pride and enthusiasm as they wrote and talked about themselves.
As part of our learning, we also came together to learn about Waitangi Day. Through this, we discussed the importance of respect, kindness, and working together. The children then created our very own Room 6 Class Treaty. Each learner wrote their name on a feather, and together we agreed on the rules and values that will guide us in our classroom this year. This was a meaningful experience and a great way to build a strong sense of belonging.
Our inquiry topic for this term is “Where I Come From and What It Means to Be a Kiwi.” To begin this journey, the children created Me Maps, sharing their identity, culture, and experiences. They explored what transitioning to New Zealand means for them and how their backgrounds shape who they are. Please have a look at their work—it beautifully reflects their learning and identity.
Week 1 has truly been fun and has sparked excitement for learning. There is so much more to come, and I can’t wait to continue this journey with our Room 6 learners.
Reminders: Swimming lessons are on Wednesdays and Fridays – please ensure your child brings their swimming gear on these days.
Thank you for your continued support. Stay tuned for more learning and fun ahead!
Cheehooo! School is back for 2026 and what a beautiful way to start our first day of the school year. Ngā mihi Te Moana Nui a Kiwa for a beautiful pōwhiri to welcome our new students & staff! We have two tamaiti fou in Potu 12 this year, afio mai Carlisle & Zion! We can’t wait for this year and all the fun learning that will be happening throughout!
As we come to the end of the year in Room 7, I want to acknowledge the incredible journey our learners have been on. Their determination, curiosity, and kindness have shone through in everything they’ve taken on. It has been a joy to watch them grow, challenge themselves, and support one another in so many meaningful ways. To our whānau, thank you for your encouragement and partnership, your support has helped make our class feel like a strong, connected community.
A quick reminder: Tuesday is our final day of school for the year, and we finish at 12:30.
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your holidays be restful, joyful, and full of time spent with loved ones.
Today, Room 6 proudly celebrated our tamariki’s successes, achievements, and best efforts at the Waka Ahuru Prize Giving. It was a wonderful moment to acknowledge the hard work, growth, and dedication our learners have shown throughout the year.
From Room 6, we congratulate the following recipients:
Ahana – Best Efforts Award
Mary-Le – Academic Excellence Award
Damian – G.I.V.E.S Award
Amricha – Outstanding Effort Award
Jasmine – 90%+ Attendance Award
A huge congratulations to all these amazing learners! We are incredibly proud of you.
As the prizegiving awards were presented to these five learners, I also want to acknowledge that every child in Room 6 has shown their own best efforts and growth this year. I have witnessed each student working hard, trying their best, and showing commitment to their learning. To celebrate this, all Room 6 students will be receiving a small end-of-year class gift to recognise their memorable learning journey and achievements.
Thank you to all our whānau for your ongoing support for your tamariki throughout the year. We truly appreciate everything you do.
Room 6 also performed beautifully on stage, dancing “Have a Very Merry Christmas” with full enthusiasm and joy. They shone brightly and made us all proud.
As the year comes to an end, we wish all our Room 6 learners continued success. May you thrive and shine in the years ahead.
e had a super fun day in Potu Tasi, making Christmas pictures on the iPad!
Mrs Fua showed us all how to draw, step-by-step! Pisa is a great helper!
What Did We Make?
We used shapes and bright colours to draw:
A Christmas Tree! We made big green triangles and put pretty decorations on them.
A Happy Message! We typed the words: “Manuia le Kirisimasi” (That means Merry Christmas!)
A Shiny Bauble! We drew one special, round decoration to put on a Christmas card later. We took a photo of ourselves, lasso it, added some text & dots to decorate.
Sharing is Caring!
We showed our colourful pictures to all our friends. Everyone did a great job!
We also saved our pictures safely in our Drive. Now we can print them for cards!
Incredibly, this year is hurtling towards Christmas and we are near the end of our time together for 2025. This doesn’t mean the end of our learning journey though and I am sure there are lots of adventures ahead. Swimming is always a highlight and we have been preparing ourselves for Summer water safety. We have been learning to get in and out of the pool safely and how to recognise what a current feels like. We’ve also practiced floating on our backs with pool noodles and kicking and blowing bubbles at the side of the pool.
In Maths, we have had fun learning about tessellation. This happens when shapes fit together without any spaces in between. We demonstrated this through Art by creating dragon eyes. We made our own repeated patterns around the eyes that tessellate. They turned out really well.
I’ve had to leave Room 7 a bit early to have a bit of surgery, but I will be back at Homai in 2026. This meant a pizza shout on my last day at school. I have absolutely loved teaching Room 7 and getting to know whānau. We are blessed to have Whaea Kirandeep teaching your tamariki for the remaining days of the term.
Room 6 had an exciting and fun-filled week of learning, teamwork, and new experiences!
Our biggest highlight of week 7 was the Maths Expo at school . Students took part in hands-on maths challenges, including counting activities, puzzles, patterns, and shape tasks. They were curious, focused, and eager to try each station. It was wonderful to see everyone working together, sharing ideas, and using their problem-solving skills.
While Mrs. Virk was away this week, Mrs. Raj supported our tamariki beautifully, helping them create their amazing maths hats for the expo. The students showed great creativity and pride in their work.
We have also started our swimming sessions each Monday . Students are practicing water safety, building confidence in the pool, and encouraging each other along the way .
Room 6 has had a wonderful week of learning and growth, and we are so proud of their efforts!
This week, our class had the opportunity to take part in the Homai School Maths Expo 2025, and it was a wonderful two days of excitement, discovery, and hands-on learning. As soon as we arrived, the students were buzzing with curiosity, eager to explore the different activities set up around the hall.
Our tamariki enjoyed a wide range of stations, including Guess How Many, Estimation, Tangram Challenges, Measurement Tasks, and Shape Building Activities. It was fantastic to see them working together, sharing ideas, and using their maths knowledge in real and meaningful ways.
Throughout the Expo, many students commented on how much fun they were having. They especially loved challenges where they could build, solve puzzles, and test their thinking. For many of them, it was a moment to realise that
Maths isn’t just worksheets — it can be active, creative, and exciting.
I was proud to see their confidence grow with each activity. Students encouraged one another, celebrated each other’s successes, and showed great perseverance when tasks became tricky. Their teamwork, focus, and enthusiasm made the experience even more special.
A huge thank you to all the staff who helped prepare, organise, and run the Expo. Our class had an amazing time, and the learning that took place was truly valuable.
We are already looking forward to next year’s Maths Expo!
focused on is media fair? Our class here really enjoyed this session. We understand that the media is very biased, and by researching the products and the truth behind them. Creating Alternative versions of these ads showing the truth of the product.
Enjoy exploring our class blogs to see what we have come up with.
Finally, the swimming pool is open and we’re getting wet! Swimming is during 2nd block on Mondays so don’t forget to send your tamariki with their togs. In between rain showers, we’re having some sun, so hats are a must. The playground is a “No hat, no play” zone.
One of our favourite games to play outside recently is Cats and Rats. Someone tells a story, and everyone has to listen really carefully to find out if the cats are going to chase the rats, or the other way around. After a busy day, sometimes we listen to some gentle stories or calming music and have a rest. This helps us to relax and feel calm before we go home.
Whaea Angela was doing some training this week so we had the lovely Mrs Raj in class for a couple of days. Mrs Raj was helping Tama to choose who he would go home with this weekend. Well done to Mya for always showing your Homai G.I.V.E.S. I’m sure Tama will have a great weekend with you and your whānau.
