Week 5

The sun is out and so are the scooters! Our tamariki are having a great time whizzing around on their wheels during break times. Just reminder that to ride the scooters, children must be wearing closed in shoes and a sunhat. Helmets are provided with the school scooters. Students are also welcome to bring their own scooter from home but will need their own helmet as well. And another reminder to please make sure that your children have a water bottle and hat to wear in this hot weather.

Now that we’re into the warmer months, the pool is open! Room 7 is booked to swim on Mondays so you have the weekend to get togs ready.

We are continuing to do our Reading, Writing, and Maths assessments. Room 7 has been working so hard on this and it’s great to see how results have improved throughout the year. As part of our Inquiry topic on Rangatiratanga, we have been learning about Te Whiti and Tohu, the rangatira who led the peaceful resistance at Parihaka in the 1880s. We were able to incorporate this into our artwork as well as learn that there are peaceful ways to disagree with others. We’ve also been playing some fun Maths warm up games in class. One of our favourites is the Addition Quick Draw, where two people have a “duel” by standing back-to-back, taking three paces, then firing a number of fingers. The person who correctly adds the total number of fingers wins the duel.

On Friday we took part in the hikoi around the school field for Gumboot Friday. In fact, Room 7 actually led the march. We had been very busy making posters to show our support for those who need someone to talk to when things get hard.

Finally, congratulations to Shalom who was awarded Tama for the weekend!

Smart Media – Keep our drive tidy! Blog posts – Quality is Key

Kia ora everyone,

Today Room 10 explored Google Drive and learnt about what a quality blog post looks like.

I hope you are all keeping well! We’re only a few weeks away from the end of the year, and our class is continuing to work hard during our weekly Cybersmart sessions. Having Whaea Natalie help me facilitate these sessions has been invaluable. I must say, I really enjoyed today’s lesson — I saw a number of students latch onto understanding three or more new things, and that for me is a huge win!

Today, Room 10 explored Google Drive and learnt about what a quality blog post looks like.

It was great to see our class finding different ways to access Google Drive. Keeping our Drive neat and tidy is really important, and I’m glad we had a chance to focus on that. Because our class Chromebooks vary in model, moving files can look a little different — for some, it’s as simple as a drag and drop, while others might need to click the three dots on a file, then select Organise and Move.

We also went through the What makes a Quality Blog Post Checklist and analysed three different examples to see if they met the listed criteria. I found the checklist helpful and clear — it really gave our students a better understanding of what makes a strong blog post. Here’s the checklist:

Our class is at different stages of understanding the elements of blogging. Some students are already applying these concepts confidently, while others are still practising and developing their skills. It was great for everyone to explore different types of blogs and use prompts such as sentence starters from the slides such as this one which I’ve found very useful:

Maybe you could take some time to check if your own Google Drive is tidy and well-organised too. I know I’ll be investing more time into tidying my one up too.

And if you have a bit more time, check out these three blogs and see if you can recognise whether they meet the criteria in our Quality Blog Checklist:

Have a happy rest of the week 🙂

Ngā mihi,
Ms Elly

🚀 Room 10’s Digital & Writing Power Up! ✍️

A huge shout-out to Elly for leading an awesome mahi (great work) session this week! Room 10 focused on two essential skills: digital organization and quality writing.

💻 Google Drive Detox 📂

Our main mission was conquering Google Drive! Learners successfully tackled digital clutter by:

  • Locating their files (the starting point for everything!).
  • Sorting documents into clear folders.
  • Renaming and deleting old files for a clean, efficient workspace.

Big Win: We are becoming super-organised digital citizens!

📝 The Secrets to Quality Blog Posts

We also unpacked what makes a blog post truly great! Learners identified key features of a quality post (like catchy titles, short paragraphs, and great visuals) and immediately put these skills into practice.

O Le Tala i le Niu: Our Art Adventure!

What a creative week in Potu Tasi! We listened to a wonderful Samoan story: O Le Tala i le Niu (The Story of the Coconut). It was all about the niu (coconut palm) and the popo (coconut).

Digital Art Skills Unlocked!

After the story, we became digital artists! We used tools like shapes, the pen, colour fill, and resize to draw the world of the coconut:

  • The la (sun) ☀
  • The vai (cloud) with rain 🌧
  • The palapala (ground)
  • The niu (tree) 🌳
  • The popo (coconut) 🥥

It was great to see everyone using the new Samoan words and their digital skills!

Sharing and Saving

Everyone was so proud to share their creations with the class! They explained their artwork, which was a fantastic chance to practice speaking.

Finally, they learned an important digital skill by exporting their artwork and saving it safely to their drive.

A big fa’afetai tele to everyone for a fantastic, creative week!

Digital Journey: From Explain Everything to Scratch Junior

Room 6 has been growing into confident digital learners! After mastering Explain Everything, where we created and shared our learning projects, we’ve now stepped into the exciting world of Scratch Junior.

In Scratch Junior, we’ve been exploring how to create animations and tell stories through coding. Our journey has been full of creativity, problem-solving, and a lot of “try again” moments. Some of our projects worked perfectly on the first go, while others needed a few more tries—but that’s how we learn!

After many trials and errors, Room 6 is proud to say we’ve successfully recorded our first Scratch Junior project—a fun animation showing a scene changing from day to night.

We’re so proud of our persistence and teamwork. Next, we can’t wait to add more characters, sounds, and actions to make our stories come alive!

Kairos’s Scene changing SJnr.

Damian made an amazing project with a cyclist and a fairy, even adding sentences to describe what was happening in his scene.

Painting Ruru with Whaea Monique

Fakaalofa lahi atu Edubloggers,

Today I am going to share with you what I have been learning about in our painting seccion with Whaea Monique. One of the best things I learnt was colour blending with paint to add more detail and texture to make our feathers look realistic. The meaning of our painting was that in dark times there is always hope! The challenging part of making this was sketching our ruru to start off. We all enjoyed it and took a photo in the end.

Ngā mihi,

Rūma 23.

Week 3 – Assessments and Diwali Preparations

This week, we have been busy completing our assessments while continuing with our regular learning across all subjects. Everyone has been working hard and showing great focus!

At the same time, we’ve started getting ready to celebrate Diwali in Week 4. Our class has begun preparing colorful decorations for our Diwali Wall, which is part of our upcoming Diwali Week Challenge. The activities are fun, creative, and a great way to learn about the Festival of Lights.

Our classroom is now filled with bright colors, lights, and festive vibes. We’ve also started preparing a Bollywood dance performance for the Diwali Assembly, and the girls have been practising with lots of excitement and energy!

It’s been a wonderful week full of learning, creativity, and celebration.

Week 2 – Niuean Language Week

Apologies for the late blog post! During Week 2, we celebrated Niuean Language Week and had so much fun exploring the Niuean culture through different hands-on activities.

We learned about traditional Niuean customs, songs, and crafts. One of the highlights of the week was making spears to present in our school assembly. Everyone worked hard to create a large class spear for the performance and also made their own individual spears to take home.

It was such an enjoyable week full of creativity, teamwork, and cultural learning. We’re proud of how everyone participated and showed respect for the Niuean culture — fakaaue lahi (thank you very much)!

Week 3

Kia ora whanau. Another week has whizzed by and we are busy doing our Reading and Maths assessments. With our senior students at camp this week, we will be celebrating Diwali in Week 4. In the meantime, we have been preparing some Diwali crafts to display in our classroom window. For our Mitey lessons, we’ve been learning about being a good friend and what it feels like to have a friend. In Maths we have been learning how to use an open number line for subtraction and revisiting some of our learning about fractions.

Tama had a difficult time deciding who to go home with this weekend because everyone has been so amazing in showing their Homai G.I.V.E.S. This week’s G.I.V.E.S. value has been Integrity (doing the right thing). Congratulations to Raeesah for having Tama for the weekend!

Becoming Media Detectives!

We learned how to spot fake news this week!

Fake Stories: By Mistake vs. On Purpose

  • Misinformation: Wrong story shared by mistake (no intention to lie).
  • Disinformation: Wrong story shared on purpose to trick you (a lie!).

When Info Looks Funny, What To Do?

  1. Stop! Don’t share if you feel too excited or mad.
  2. Check the Source: Who posted it? Can you trust them?
  3. Check Other Places: Do other good websites say the same thing?
  4. Picture Check: If a photo looks impossible, ask an adult to check its real source!

Our Fake Picture Project

I used drawings.new to make a fake picture . I took two real photos and stuck them together to look real! It was easy to trick the eye, showing us why we must be careful.

Your Question 🤔

What’s the one rule you’ll use now to check if a photo online is real?

Five ways with numbers on our EE app

Our Number Project: Choosing and Creating

This week, we explored the idea of personal choice as we all selected a favorite number to work with.

What We Created

Our numbers came to life through a mix of traditional and digital tools:

  • We wrote the number using a pen tool.
  • We created text using the text tool.
  • We colored the numbers using the paint bucket.
  • We added visual detail with clip art.
  • We finalized our designs by taking photographs of the work.

Skills and Challenges

We are most proud of successfully using the clip art, paint bucket, and pen tools.

However, we encountered a few challenges along the way:

  • Learning how to spell numbers correctly.
  • Trying to use a different language in our designs.
  • Cropping images.
  • AirDropping our finished projects to the teacher.

Question for the Reader: What is your favorite number and why?

Week 2 Niuean Language Week

Fakaalofa lahi atu! This week we proudly supported Niuean Language Week, beginning with the flag-raising ceremony on Monday morning. As a class, we made a spectacular tao (spear) to show at the school assembly. We didn’t realise that it was a competion and our spear won first place in Waka Ahuru. It was such a surprise to hear the announcement and to be given iceblocks as our prize.

We joined the whole of New Zealand in practicing the “Shake Out” drill. We learned that our country sits on two tectonic plates, which means that earthquakes can (and do) happen in Aotearoa. Now we know what to do if we ever find ourselves in a shakey situation. We all practiced getting under desks and tables as quickly as possible and we held on tight.

Congratulations to Azyla, who was awarded our trophy, Tama, to take home for the weekend!

A highlight of the week was Athletics Day on Friday. We had so much fun playing different games, from the Chicken Toss, to the Sack Race. Here are some photos for you to enjoy.

Week 1, Term 4 – Fiji Language Week Celebration

We started Term 4 with an exciting celebration of Fiji Language Week! Our class took part in fun and creative activities to learn more about Fijian culture and language.

One of the highlights of the week was designing our own Masi (traditional Fijian bark cloth). This was our creative art project for the term, and we worked together to make beautiful patterns that reflected Fijian designs. We were so proud of how amazing our Masi turned out — we really rocked our design!

To wrap up the week, we confidently presented our Masi on stage at Friday’s assembly. It was a wonderful moment to share our learning and creativity with the whole school.

Vinaka vakalevu to everyone for making Fiji Language Week a fun and memorable start to Term 4!

Next week, we are looking forward to celebrating Niuean Language Week and participating in our Athletics Day on Friday — another exciting week ahead!

Term 4, Week 1

Bula Vinaka! Welcome back to school everybody. What a great start to the term we have had. We began our week with a powhiri for our new staff and students and then kicked off the celebrations for Fijian Language Week. Throughout the week we made our Masi and practices our Meke (dance) for Friday’s assembly. We were treated to Bongos chips and coconut cookies on Thursday and a performance by the Manurewa High School Fijian group at our school assembly.

For our Mitey lesson this week we talked about how different individuals have different needs and why we don’t always treat everybody exactly the same. We demonstrated this with bandaids. We each pretended that we had hurt ourselves on different parts of the body, but Whaea Angela put a bandaid on everybody’s right elbow. This showed us that even though she’d treated us all the same, sometimes what we need might be different to what someone else needs. It was an interesting lesson.

Guess what? Room 7 won the school’s Top Attendance Award AGAIN! This is the 4th time since it started in Term 3. Thank you whanau for ensuring that your tamariki come to school every day. This is hugely beneficial for their learning and it’s wonderful to see students blossom in their learning. Tama had a difficult time deciding who to go home with this weekend. He’s spending the weekend with Nur-Shafiqah. Well done Nur-Shafiqah for showing your Homai G.I.V.E.S. throughout the week. We’re very proud of you.
