Te Whare Tapa Whā – Health

 1. What is Te Whare Tapa Whā? –

There are 5 of hauroa.

The 5 areas of hauroa are Taha Whanau (Family and social), Taha Hinengaro (Mental and emotional), Taha Wairua (Spiritual), Taha Tinana (Pysical), and Whenua (Land and Roots).

Te Whare Tapa is Māori concept about – The 4 sides of Maori health.

The 4 walls of a whare and whenua……..(interconnect) – taha wairua/spiritual wellbeing, taha hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing, taha tinana/physical wellbeing and taha whānau/family and social wellbeing.

 

2. How can you take care of your hauora and others? – 

The ways you can take care of your hauora are – 

  • Take some take out for you.
  • Connect with whanau and friends.
  • Keep active.
  • Look after your phyical health.
  • Live a healthy life.

The ways you can take care of others’ hauora are – 

  • Go for a walk around your local neighbourhood.
  • Get some lunch together.
  • Play video games
  • Paint a canvas and swap it every 2 minutes
  • Watch a movie

3. What does being assertive mean? – It means you clearly explain what you need or want from someone. Without being pushy or trying to frighten them.

Being assertive means  –

  • identify their own feelings;
  • speak up for themselves and others;
  • avoid and respond to bullying;
  • disagree respectfully;
  • negotiate with others;
  • say “no” without feeling guilty;
  • build up stronger relationships;
  • build confidence and self-esteem; and,
  • feel in control.

POV: Your boss asked you to do work that doesn’t match your job description but he knows that you will get it done and adds “I trust you to get it done.”

Say no – No sorry, I don’t think I have time to fit this in.

Gives a reason – I don’t want to do this because I didn’t put this on my contract and I have to be somewhere.

Acknowledge feelings – I know you feel upset that I can’t get this done but maybe you could ask someone else.

Suggests an alternative – Possibly next time you can tell me beforehand and another person and I could half the job and get it done before I have to go.

If they keep pressuring, walk away – Walk away.

 

4. Why is it important that you take care of all areas of hauora? – 

It is important that I take care of all areas of my hauora because It allows me to set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. For strong health and healthy wellbeing.
