Tp – 9RB – Separating Super Saturated Salt Solution

Aim

I want to separate the salt and the water that I mixed together in the last experiment.

Research

Find a website explaining how to separate a solution.

Equipment

  • Conical Flask
  • Funnel
  • Paper towel (used as filter paper)
  • Bunsen Burner and tripod
  • Bung and tube
  • Boiling tube
  • Beaker with ice and water

Method

  1. Put on Safety Glasses.
  2. Filter the Salt solution to remove the solid salt.
    1. Put the Conical Flask on the bench, with the Funnel in it.
    2. Fold two pieces of paper towel into the funnel (remember the best way to fold filter paper?).
    3. Carefully pour the salt solution through the filter paper into the Conical Flask.
    4. Discard the filter paper into the bin, and wash out the beaker and funnel.
  3. Boil off the water and collect it in a cold boiling tube.
      1. Set up the Bunsen Burner with the tripod and gauze on top.
      2. Put the bung into the Conical Flask.
      3. Put the Conical Flask onto the tripod.
      4. Put some ice and water in the Beaker.
      5. Put the Boiling Tube into the ice water beaker, and put the tube into the Boiling Tube.
      6. You might need to use a clamp and stand to hold the Boiling Tube steady.
      7. Light the Bunsen and boil the Salt Solution (don’t boil it dry – you’ll break the glass!).
      8. Watch the water condense in the boiling tube.
  4. Clean up all the equipment and put it away.
    1. Wait for the conical flask to cool.
    2. Rinse all the glassware in water, getting rid of the salt.
    3. Put them away in the tray.
    4. Put the other things away where they go (eg: clamp stand under the bench).
