Aim
I want to separate the salt and the water that I mixed together in the last experiment.
Research
Find a website explaining how to separate a solution.
Equipment
- Conical Flask
- Funnel
- Paper towel (used as filter paper)
- Bunsen Burner and tripod
- Bung and tube
- Boiling tube
- Beaker with ice and water
Method
- Put on Safety Glasses.
- Filter the Salt solution to remove the solid salt.
- Put the Conical Flask on the bench, with the Funnel in it.
- Fold two pieces of paper towel into the funnel (remember the best way to fold filter paper?).
- Carefully pour the salt solution through the filter paper into the Conical Flask.
- Discard the filter paper into the bin, and wash out the beaker and funnel.
- Boil off the water and collect it in a cold boiling tube.
-
- Set up the Bunsen Burner with the tripod and gauze on top.
- Put the bung into the Conical Flask.
- Put the Conical Flask onto the tripod.
- Put some ice and water in the Beaker.
- Put the Boiling Tube into the ice water beaker, and put the tube into the Boiling Tube.
- You might need to use a clamp and stand to hold the Boiling Tube steady.
- Light the Bunsen and boil the Salt Solution (don’t boil it dry – you’ll break the glass!).
- Watch the water condense in the boiling tube.
-
- Clean up all the equipment and put it away.
- Wait for the conical flask to cool.
- Rinse all the glassware in water, getting rid of the salt.
- Put them away in the tray.
- Put the other things away where they go (eg: clamp stand under the bench).
