BioChem – Extracting DNA

Kia Ora Everyone

Today for our biochemistry class, we extracted the DNA from filtered strawberry cells.

The way we did this was by adding the strawberry cells into a plastic bag with salt and dishwashing liquid.

We then crushed all of the large clumps of strawberry down into a pasty texture, after which we added water to dilute it a bit.

Then we funneled it into a beaker to get a clear but sort of misty strawberry liquid.

Once it was nice and filtered, we then added ethanol which after some time revealed the clear and gooey cells we wanted.

After the cells became visible, we extracted them with a sort of small metal stick and put the cells in a different beaker.

This experiment was very fun to do and we got some pretty funny photo’s too.

You should try this experiment for yourself.
