Te-Tiriti For Kids –

Kia Ora, Malo Lelei And Talofa Lava

Throughout these chaotic weeks, my favorite topic to learn about was Te-Tiriti o Waitangi, why? this topic helped me learn the importance of knowing your rights and balancing peace in this country.

Waitangi day is prominent to all indigenous people of New-Zealand. It is a reasonable holiday because this was the day the Māori & Pakeha declared a treaty for protection and peace between these two parties and for those that glorify & reflect on this day, this holiday was between the Māori and Pakeha to coincide with the treaty between these 2 parties, about 40-46 Māori chiefs were persuaded into agreement. Henry & his son Edward William translated the Treaty of Waitangi supplied by Captain William Hobson and James Busby overnight for the signing between the Māori and Pakeha on February 6th 1840.

The Treaty of Waitangi was later signed by both parties on February 6th 1840. This agreement led to Pakehas being drunk, Trees chopped, families starving and slavery (Mokāi) to Māoris. This crisis couldn’t keep prevailing, so the Māori contacted William Hobson to control his people. After William Hobson took dominion over the pakeha, New-Zealand was then separated from New South Wales, and became an independent crown territory, with Auckland confirmed as the Capital of Aotearoa in 1841.
