training to play cricket

Hi my name is Noa and today I am going to tell you about training to play cricket. The first step was when you have to catch the ball you have to shape your hands like a bowl. When you catch it you have to pull it towards your chest and the next step we have to dive on a soft platform and catch the ball. After we did that we had to get a ball and chuck it up in the air and clap as much as you can and try to catch it again.  My high score is 11 and my favourite was the diving.

Collaboration :)

Collaboration is basically working with others, so if someone is far away from you, you can share your doc with that person and then you can work together on the same slide.

It is important to have rules when collaborating with others so you don’t mess up with your teammates.

First experience in collage

Related image

This week,on Thursday a group of year 8’s and I were going to collage for a day to experience what it is like to be in collage, what classes there are, what they learn, what they have and meeting old friends or new people. for me I was quite nervous and scared because it looked way different compared to primary school and there were new people, most I haven’t meet or seen before and teachers. Collage was not what I expected. The Teachers were nice, the people that go to collage were nice they went about their day, they had a tuck shop filled with a lot of delicious food, there was a lot of freedom by that there was a lot of places to walk around and you could go to the pool at lunch if you got clothes. I think what I am going to find hard in collage is where to go since its not like primary. just sitting in one class you have to move in different classes in collage which you can get lost since there are lot of class rooms and corridors to go through.  I had a lot of fun in collage there was a lot of subjects such as wood work, metal work,Performing arts,Science,Food/textiles and other etc. Bay of island collage is an awesome Collage in my opinion I really cant wait to go there next year and meet new people and teachers.

Report writting

Last week we have been doing report writing and My Subject was Giant weta. My subjects was Diet, Habitat, life cycle. Diet means what they eat, Habitat means where they live. And the last one means the series of changes in the life of an organism including reproduction. The easy part was writing all the facts and that down. The hard part was find the facts and putting them into categories. Here is a piece of my work to show you.

Koura crayfish report

Title: Freshwater crayfish/ koura crayfish.

Opening statement: What I’m talking about is freshwater crayfish here’s some facts that
I found out. The freshwater crayfish in NZ I’m talking about is also known as koura crayfish
they live in the North Island and south islands in Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast
in the South Island but they are a little and slightly smaller (about 70 mm long) and
have less hairy pincers. They live in freshwater.

Appearance
Its appearance is close to lobsters even though lobsters are red but they are the closest to crayfish.
Also there are so many crayfish such as blue crayfish, red king crab, common yabby, acocil and
tons of others.

Diet
Their Diet is really easy they contain veggies so they don’t really go for flesh so really their like pray
(pray are vegetarians in other words NOT predators-predators are flesh eating their diet is pray)
so they only eat veggies or sea grass (another word for grass in the sea).

Behaviors
In this the crayfish would meet up somewhere and have a very aggressive fight the crayfish
would try to wrestle  their opponent down but it would sometimes lead to a high risk of injury
for the other crayfish that could possibly be involved in the fight.

Diagram: It starts with a egg then it starts growing then growing till the crayfish is a adult.
The life cycle is really in 6 stages and here’s a diagram about it.

So there you go there’s the work about freshwater crayfish.Image result for koura crayfish

The video that started it ALL

I have always been a bit of a rebel.  So when people challenge me, I usually “fall” for it, as I constantly like a challenge to push me that bit further towards EXCELLENCE. That is why I signed up for the Digitally Fluency course last term, after watching this video, thinking I need something more than just google classroom for my teaching practice. Something that will make my life easier and also make my students’ life easier….
So what is EXCELLENCE in teaching then?
“You can not change the hand you are dealt , but you can change how you play the hand.”  As teachers, our hand, are the students and we need to change the way that we “play our hand”. I am sure that all of us teachers, have walked away, after a lesson with the feeling: “aaaaw this did not work, this did not turn out the way I anticipated”…that is when we need to change the way that we play our hand. Working with a new hand daily or sometimes per period, as different students have different learning needs, we need to UP or game, and be on TOP of the changing needs in front of us.
So to answer the question:  What is excellence in teaching then? According to me: It is the adaptability of the teacher and to change your teaching style, to suit the “hand” in front of you…I hope this makes SENSE?? (off course ALL the other important stuff, like knowing your topic, and all the other things need to be in place…I am just talking IN CLASS, the “how” )
An example of this is:
I have given my seniors a choice about their mathematical learning pathway forward, from the start of this term.  I’ve put up on my website: 4 different topics. They had to watch a few videos at the start, had to work through the slideshow, and had to look at the assessment, and then had to make an informed decision about their path forward.  I’ve put all of this up on our class site, and they go on at their own pace.  This has freed me up, to support them individually, some great learning conversations are happening not only with me, but also with each other. Some of them, still need me to be their on the white board, every now and then, and then we move out of the computer room to the class, but mostly the “machine” is humming away smoothly, with them driving their own learning, and me putting up the work at night. If they miss a day or two, they just continue where they were before they missed school. I’ve made videos of myself talking through the slide shows, doing the homework, and they love being responsible for their own learning.  They can rewind their learning, and at their own pace.  They can listen to me doing the same lesson over and over, if they want to. At this stage, it means I am working much harder , as I have 8 topics (4 year 12 and 4 year 13 topics) to do each night, but I know once everything is in place I can just make minor tweaks next year.  I’ve also added teaching videos of other teaching explaining the same work, and different methods explaining the same work.
It is so cool to see them working so hard, and taking responsibility for their own learning in stead of me doing it all on the white board, or by their desks and them copying.  Today in class, I had the year 12’s in the last period, I took them to class and tested them with a few algebra questions on the white board that we worked through together as a group. It was the BEST feeling ever when one of the boys started RAPPING…’top stays top, outside goes bottom”…the rap that I use for explaining the rule in algebra when there is a surd (he watched a video of me doing the rap on our class site)…that showed me that this method works for them…I’ve changed the way that I played the hand, and for today: I can go home, exhausted BUT happy!
yay!! I love my job (even after 33 years)
