English Short Story Review

Book Name: There’s nothing like a good book

Author: Hilton Ayery

I believe the author did a decent job at introducing some of the characters. We learnt some backstory about Aunty Ena as well as some information about Paul’s personality. Do I think they were the most interesting characters ever? No. But this was a short story and the characters served their purpose.

This story is structured reasonably well however the plot is boring. There is very little that happens and what does happen feels minor. Overall the story was boring and not attention-grabbing.

The author used basic language features, there were not many exciting describing words used. I feel this is what resulted in a dull story as boring words made the events sound minor.

The author actually portrayed the theme very well. The story showed how different  generations can react to different scenarios. The story also covered how people’s minds can work when they are bored; often finding negative or bad things to do.
