English – The Renaissance: Background to Shakespeare’s world

Last Week, in Level 1 English, my class was learning more about the Renaissance so we could understand more about Shakespeare’s world. Our Learning Goal is to understand and explain some key facts about the background to Shakespeare’s world, the Renaissance, and some of the important Renaissance artists.

Most of last week, we studied the Renaissance till our understanding of it was pretty good. The word Renaissance is a french word meaning ‘rebirth’ or ‘revival’. The Renaissance originally started in Florence, Italy, during the 14th century onwards to the 17th century (1300 – 1600).

I also learnt a bit about Shakespeare’s background, such as the two rulers during his time. The two rulers during Shakespeare’s life were, Queen Elizabeth I, who was also the queen during the Elizabethan era (see previous Blog Post), and King James I (he was also King James VI in Scotland).

We also learnt a bit about four famous Renaissance artists, those of which were, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Donatello, and Raffaelo Sanzio. I created a slideshow about them called ‘Not the Ninja Turtles!’. It is called this because the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) were named after the four Renaissance artists e.g Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Rafael.

Here is my slide show:

One interesting thing I learnt about the Renaissance was that Michelangelo was actually rivals with two other Renaissance artists, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Raffaello Sanzio. The three of them were all intense rivals. Though, what would be even more interesting would be, if Donatello was alive during the other three’s time, would they have been enemies too?

One thing I want to learn more about is how different it is to times now? Is this era better than back then? How much did we change? Would it benefit us more if we went back to those times?

Thank you for reading my blog post!
