A pitbull named Max
In 1915, David was drafted into the war against the Germans, feeling lost and confused about the reasons driving the Great War. As he stepped onto the weathered deck of a warship, he was surrounded by soldiers from around the globe—Americans and Italians among them. A knot of anxiety tightened in his stomach as he contemplated the trials and dangers that lay ahead.
After weeks spent navigating treacherous seas, David and his comrades arrived in Cairo, Egypt, where the sun blazed relentlessly over the sandy landscape. Soon thereafter, they reached Gallipoli, a region marked by rugged terrain and the haunting whispers of conflict. It was there that David discovered a scrappy pitbull named Max, whose fierce intelligence and loyalty immediately drew him in. Over the next three weeks, before David was thrust into the trenches, he taught Max various commands, forging a bond that offered him comfort amidst the turmoil.
One fateful day, as David struggled to scale a steep hill, he found his thoughts consumed by memories of Max. Just then, a familiar bark broke through his reverie, stirring a surge of excitement within him. It was Max! Overjoyed, David couldn’t help but yell out, “Max! Max!”—his voice echoing across the battlefield, a reminder of the friendship that kept his spirits alive amid the chaos of war. Until Max started whining about something, David asked the commander if he could go check what Max was so worried about. The commander surprisingly agreed. David and Max sprinted down the steep hill, and as David was sprinting, he saw Max barking at the air, and he realised… It was a gas bomb! First, David warned the citizens, then the soldiers. David picked up Max and ran to an empty barn. David covered Max’s slobbery face with a striped cloth. After the longest, most anxious 30 minutes of their lives, someone yelled, “It’s safe!” After the events of this, Max the pitbull was praised as a hero.
