Hello, we are practising for our english assessment on the movie ¨The Freedom Writers¨. We did a practice assessment on Alejandro’s speech about how this summer was the worst he had experienced in his life. In his speech he talks about how he and his mum got evicted and how his mum felt like she had failed as a parent, this speech came as a surprise for the rest of the class because Alejandro was quiet and nobody knew who he was so it was a bit of a shock when he spoke so deeply about his feelings even at a time of great sadness for him and his mum.
Eva is a character from the freedom writers who is from latin america and was brought up in a gang affiliated family in long beach california. When Eva was young her dad was framed and put in prison for murder. When she was around the age of 15 she was a key witness to a drive by where her boyfriend (Paco) shot a shop keeper. In court they were having a trial for a kid who the authorities thought shot the shopkeeper, but when the judge asked Eva what happened she said that the real culprit was her boyfriend. When Eve said that she knew that there would be consequences for her like getting beat up or even murdered, her father even disowned her. Eva showed extreme courage for doing the right thing even if it put herself at risk.
I think that Eva is a good role model because she did the right thing even though the only consequences of siding with her boyfriend who is in her gang was that she had to live with the fact that she falsely imprisoned and innocent man. She knew that by siding against Paco she would be kicked out of her gang, potentially beaten up or even killed. Her father who previously loved her more than anything disowned her which showed how serious the situation was and she still mustered up the courage to do the right thing.
