THE MARAE
I felt excited to finally be going back to the Arahura Marae. As we got there we lined up at the gates, the gates were a lush green color. Then the boys stood behind the girls and Diana told us to walk on the left hand side of the path, left for living, right for the dead.
Then we took our shoes off and went inside the wharenui. Henare Mason welcomed us to the marae in Māori and he was our whaikorero for the day. Then Brown Apera introduced our school in Māori. We got to go to the kitchen for some food. They had mini pies that were some of the best pies ever . After the food we went into the marae to introduce ourselves and tell them our favorite food and we got told some stories. About the war at lake manhapoa and that most of their good warriors had died, one guy decided to carry their heads all the way back to their village and bury them at home.
Soon after the stories and introducing ourselves Ms Kemp said we can go and play a game on their court so we played seaweed. Then we walked down to the river to find pounamu no one found any but it was very interesting down there it had changed a lot since 2 years ago but we found so much serpindtime that’s alright I had so much fun then we walked back to the marae and had lunch and played around. for a bit then we walked to the beach and looked for a good marshmallow stick and make and then the started raining on us we still made sand sculptures and I found some broken timber, a shoe. a really weird shaped stick and a piece of polystyrene
Then we walked back to the marae and had dinner, girls go first than the boys. The dinner was the best; salad and chips and lasagne! After our stomachs had settled and everyone had finished we played some games where you had to dress someone in a newspaper and weave flax. They are the two I made. There was this ball game and this game where you had to be really fast and knock over the cones before we had marshmallows.
We sang some waiata then some of us were picked to go and roast our marshmallows.Than we got into our pajamas and got ready for bed. We got to read a book for 5 minutes then lights out. It took me half an hour to get to sleep.
When I woke up the first thing I did was to take my sleeping bag into Mason’s bed since I didn’t have a pillow to sleep on so I slept on my bag.
After I went and got changed feeling refreshed then we lined up to have breakfast. I had yogurt with apple crumble and ricebubles. Then we played some battle ships and then we went and played crazy tag. Then we put our bags in the cars, we were set to go.
We went to a Picnic Point on the lush lake. The water was so calm I could hear it just as we were walking. You could hear the sounds of the birds. The track was not as slippery, luckily it was so cool there. Last time I was there it was alright but the sun was out this time so it was even better. Straight after that we got in Ms Kemp’s car and we were driving back to school and then Jack pulled out marshmallows. I ask for one he gave me one with a chocolate thin then he was going to give julian one and I keeped stealing everyone cookies and marshmallows Jack called it the hunger games we had so much fun it was funny listening to julian crash out at me he was going to steal Ollivers but Olliver was to strong And the cookies went all over Julians shorts it was crazy.
When we got back to school we went to the office and got our lunches that our parents had brought in for us. After we ate some food we went and played basketball.the bell rang and we went and did some work about the marae. I thought to myself that it was a great trip and if I could I would go again, and the walk was a great experience. Sleeping was hard but it was alright it was worth it I guess. – Cade
