intro: For thousands of years humans have looked to the sky with wonder. In Aotearoa, maori have used the moon to guide the lunar calendar to know the best time to fish and plant crops. But while the moon guided life on earth, the idea of actually going there seemed like a fairy tale. In the 1960’s that dream became a serious goal during the space race. The United States and the Soviet union competed to see who could master the technology needed to leave earths atmosphere. It was a time of amazing inventions and massive risks.
chapter 1: The tower of power
To get to the moon, NASA built the Saturn V rocket it was 111 meters tall taller than a 30 story building! This massive machine was needed to go the 384,400 kilometers into space. In the very tip sat three men Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on July 16 1969, the rocket ignited with a roar felt miles away. It burned 13 tonnes of fuel every second to push the astronauts through the atmosphere and into the silent space. create task https://docs.google.com/videos/d/1qkarePn1ixU5Sl5z16Kll38CrPMJKSLJStVpRUKO26w/edit?usp=sharing
