Vocabulary: week 2

Monday: Meaning – what does it mean?

Archive:

(The old dial phone lives on a huge stack of books and records and random piles
of paper.) The entire house is a musty archive, shuddering under the weight of its
possessions. Wài pó will be leaning into the phone, chatting up a storm and telling
Mum off for being soft on her children. My grandma is a social butterfly, the belle
of her suburb, always talking to some best friend or relation while she sits on her
throne, halfway up and halfway down the stairs.

I think archive means old history based on the knowledge that I have bolded. It gave some clues so I just inferred what might be easier for me to understand.

Tuesday: use – how do i use it?

Peaceful:

Me: Mum how was work?

Mum: It was peaceful

Mum: why? What happened?

Me: nothing

Mum: well just letting you know I’m picking you up so when I get there you better be ready.

I can use this word in lots of different situations. It means when someone doesn’t involve themself in conflict or when it’s just quiet and there’s realy nothing going on.

Wednesday: build – how is it built?

Carvings:

Root: carve

Carve is an art that can tell storys from BC. It’s a design on any hard object like wood or stone.

Suffix: Ing

Ing means an ongoing action.

If you put these two words together you will get carvings which just means the same as carve the ing adds is just an addition.
