Heart Dissection (Science)

On the 14th of May, my class and I dissected a lamb’s heart. Robert (my partner) and I were in a group and today I will share my learning about the dissection we did.

  1. What equipment did we use? We primarily used three tools. We used tweezers, scissors and a pointer. Scissors for cutting, tweezers for picking stuff up, and the pointer for pointing.

2. What steps did we do for the dissection?

  • Say a karakia (prayer) to honour the chicken that has passed.
  • Find the arteries and veins of the heart (the two tube openings at the top of the heart).
  • Slicing the heart open to view the inside.
  • Inside the heart we saw “A Four Bedroom House”. What? The corners of the heart contained four things which were the right atrium (top right), right ventricle (bottom right), left atrium (top left), and the left ventricle (bottom left).
  • Spot the chordae tendinae (a white substance which looks like strings).

3. The Heart

  • right atrium (top right)
  • right ventricle (bottom right)
  • left atrium (top left)
  • left ventricle (bottom left)
  • valves
  • ventricles
  • heartstrings
  • muscle
  • septum
  • atriums

4. 4 parts of the heart (and functions)

  • right atrium – receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the right ventricle.
  • right ventricle – receives the blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
  • left atrium – receives oxygenated blood returning from the lungs and pumps to the left ventricle.
  • left ventricle – pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body through the aorta.

Yeah that’s all bro :/
