pHabulous Chemistry

We have been looking at chemicals in class and it’s pretty cool that the stuff we use in the science class is actually in normal things like petrol and drain cleaner.
We learned about acids and bases, which have these hazard symbols on them because they can be corrosive and
burn your skin if you’re not careful. An acid is basically a substance that has a pH of less than 7, and a base is the opposite with a pH higher than 7. Most acids taste pretty sour, while bases usually feel all slippery and soapy if you touch them. (e.g Soap)
To tell them apart, we used indicators which change colour depending on what they’re in. For acids, the indicator usually turns red, but for bases it turns blue or purple. Another cool thing is when you put an acid on a metal; it starts fizzing and making bubbles because it’s creating hydrogen gas. I didn’t really realize how much of this stuff is just sitting around my house. Like, lemons and vinegar are just everyday acids, and then stuff like baking soda or the bleach under the sink are actually bases.
