Kia ora, Every second Wednesday a group of yr 6-8 from Ata Hapara goes to North Beach Community Preschool to do a kapa haka performance for the tamariki. There are about 5-8 students who have volunteered to come over to the preschool during school time. Something that I think is pretty awesome about this, is that its completely student run, what I mean by that is; we (the students) pick what songs we would like to perform, we even have organised a specific time to practice, we don’t have a teacher that runs the group just some yr 8 students, and we have organised everything by ourselves. This week my friends and I went outside at 9.30 to decide and chose what our bracket/songs will be, then we got the boys who do the performance with us and we practised the whole bracket a few times while we waited for Jenna from the preschool to pick us up. Once we got to the preschool we did the performance and everybody except myself and my friend Amaia left to go back to school. Amaia and I stayed and both chose small groups of tamariki who were interested and taught them how to make poi, the rules/tikanga of poi, how we treat the poi and some awesome things you can do with poi. I really really enjoy doing this and I know my friends do too, I would just like to thank Jenna and Whaea Jasmine for helping this happen and of course the preschool and all of the tamariki for showing interest in what my friends and I have to offer and for showing us so much manaakitanga. Myself and my friends are already looking forward to next fortnight!
