Science – Heart Dissection

Hello bloggers! In today’s blog we are talking about the heart dissection we did today. It’s kinda nasty while dis-sectioning it.

The equipment we use for this dissection are

  •  tray
  • A news paper
  • Sheep heart
  • Scalpel
  • Scissors
  • Dissecting needle
  • Pipe cleaner
  • pair of gloves
  • safety glasses

step 1: we did place a newspaper on the tray and the heart.

step 2: we did face the front of the heart towards you. There is a groove that goes from right to left.

step 3: we have to identify the pulmonary trunk and the aorta, the next step is to superior vena cava and pulmonary vein.

step 4: we have to stick our finger down down the pulmonary trunk and feel the thickness of the right ventricle wall.

step 5: we have to stick our finger down down the aorta and feel the thickness of the left ventricle wall. The left ventricle should feel a lot thicker than the right.

step 6: we have to orientate the heart so that the bottom of the heart is facing away from us. We have to ask our teacher to come over and check that it is the right way up[ before cutting the heart

step 7: when we have the heart right way up, cut the heart in half by cutting along the perimeter (outside) of the heart.

step 8: we have to identify the left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary vein entrances.

During our dissecting the heart was very thick and it had a gooey texture. When we opened the heart there was this dark red thick liquid which is called a blood clot.

– How does the heart work? The heart is a strong pump that sends blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients. It works by using electrical signals to contract and squeeze blood in a continuous, one way loop.

  • What does the atrium do? An atrium is one of the two upper chambers of the heart that acts as a receiving room, taking in blood from the body or lungs and pushing it down to the lower chambers.
  • What does ventricle do? A ventricle is a lower chamber of the heart that acts as a strong pump to push blood out to the lungs or the rest of the body?
  • What does the valve do? A valve controls the flow of liquids or gases by opening, closing, or blocking a pipe.
  • What does the aorta do? The aorta is the largest body artery in the body that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
