RPI Day 5: Planning a reading programme
Teacher timetabling
It was interesting to look at timetabling reading. I was interested to see the differing ways teachers choose to timetable their lessons. Ours needs to be somewhat flexible with any number of different things popping up throughout the week. We have clear timetabled Literacy sessions but the reading groups, writing etc aren’t set out within that. I will look into my timetable and see if adjustments would be beneficial for my class.
The task boards (again) have been great in organising our reading learning. Linking all weekly activities to one Slide just eases navigation and streamlines finding work that has been started. The students know from this if they can expect to have 2 or 3 guided workshops per week and haven’t seemed to mind that the exact time/day isn’t noted.
I am very fortunate to have fantastic teacher aide help during reading times. We will discuss the learning intentions and reading points and she will take groups also. We rotate around so I am able to work with each group and this also allows more time so our target group/s get to read at least 3 times a week with myself or the teacher aide.
Class Site
We don’t have a functional class site at the moment but I definitely see the potential and how it can be a great school-home connection. Investing the time in getting this up and running might have to be my holiday task. My students can access their learning from home though and many will often log in to school accounts at home to share their learning with whanau.
Digital reading apps
We discussed how multi-modal activities are important to interest and engage learners. This is very true of my students as they enjoy the variety of videos, hardcopy texts, digital and audio books. Independent tasks should be engaging and beneficial in building student learning – not just busy tasks. We looked at choosing apps and independent tasks that offer choice and differentiation.

I have used epic! for years but have recently been using it mostly as student choice reading. I may get back into selecting related texts and assigning those to students. My students do like having the quiz at the end of the texts and having audio options is helpful too.
I will look further into Literacy Planet and ReadWorks.
Reading like writing
I enjoyed the learning about making links between reading and writing – I like to do this in my programme. Choosing readings to scaffold my learners’ in their writing. We have just completed persuasive writing, so we read and analysed a number of persuasive texts through shared reading. Reports are always easy to read and deconstruct to aid in writing also. I liked getting to look at breaking down a fiction text further, looking at style categories. We completed a narrative unit last term and had a few sessions just working on “sizzling starts” which was similar and really helped the students build confidence in their writing.
