W.H.A.T Show

Tomorrow is the W.H.A.T Show and we rehearsed it yesterday. We rehearsed both days which took all day but it was worth it in the end as it helped us know what to do even though it wasn’t smooth and didn’t go the best. I’m really excited and can’t wait to perform.

It would have been better if we knew more about what we were doing cause it was hard just having to sit around and not know what was going on. Having a bigger space to change costumes would have also helped a bit to minimise the big crowd that appeared in the girls changing room. I also think that it would be better if i didn’t have quick costume changes so then I wouldn’t have to rush and not having to rush would just be helpful.

There are a lot of things we need to remember before, during and after the performances. Doing these things should help us stay organised and it should help us perform better and doing these things should also help others as well.

Before our performances we need to make sure we are super quiet so that we don’t interrupt the people on stage performing. We need to make sure we are at our designated hangout spot so that when we have to on people can find us and direct us to what we need to do. Costumes must be on and ready. Our hair also must be tied up with no bits hanging out.

During our performance we have to make sure to perform at 110% and make sure we are smiling. We also need to enjoy ourselves and have fun on stage. Making ourselves look animated is another big thing to make sure that we make it more exciting.

After our performance we need to be quiet so we don’t cause any extra noise. Staying out of the way is also really important so that the next people can enter the stage. Once the whole show is finished we need to prepare for the next show and make sure that all our costumes are ready to be put on and make sure we know where they are to make quick changes even quicker.

Active Listening/Assertiveness; 12Health

What is communication? Communication is something you can do (but most people aren’t too good at it) when you need to get something off of your chest or when you just need to talk about something bothering you or something on your mind. Communication can also be done to explain someone else’s feelings. This is also known as a verbal cue, a message being passed on.

What is listening? Listening is actively engaging with someone as they speak. Using your ears to hear what someone is saying.

What is active listening and how can someone actively listen? Active listening is the body language you can use to show that you are hearing what someone is saying by nodding your head, making eye contact and/or leaning forward. These are known as non-verbal cues.

What gender/sexuality issues might active listening be good for? Which location/places could it take place? When someone is trying to talk about their experience with discrimination or to be scared to come out to family or friends or teachers, active listening could be used when someone wants to talk about SA or harassment. This can take place with friends, at a therapy session, when talking to a trusted teacher as a young person. This can also be at the work place. You will need to have good active listening skills when you are a boss of some sort who has to deal with conflict.

What is assertiveness/being assertive? Give examples of someone being assertive. Assertiveness is making a problem known and talking about it in a way that people know it is a big problem that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. Being assertive can help other people to make a problem smaller or go away.  An example of being assertive is saying “We should do this” “I want us to do this”, having a clear clean voice, remaining calm, positive body language.

A trans man named Adam was employed as a Corrections officer. He grew up feeling off in his own body. Always comparing himself to the boys around him, feeling uncomfortable during puberty and hating getting changed in front of other girls. After high school he was thrown into Corrections due to family relations as he didn’t know what else to do. Before he transitioned, Adam faced a lot of misogyny in his work force. He was perceived as weak due to being a girl.

After finding himself and coming out as trans in his work place, he was riddled with transphobic comments and his identity was rejected constantly by the commission as they refused to change his name and pronouns.

First blog. ‘She said’ 12Health Assessment

Second Assessment, level 2 health.

Questions; ‘She Said’

What happened briefly in the movie, ‘She Said’? New York Times reporters, Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, work together and break one of the most important stories in a generation that held many people under long decades of silence when it came to their own experience with sexual assault in Hollywood, which still continues to this day. This movie revolves around the stories of Harvey Weinstein.

What makes sharing personal stories and experiences so powerful? I think sharing many stories is powerful because of how many people share their experience and the more attention it gets if it’s talked about more then it’ll get to more people and then those people will talk and it will get people with a bigger voice than others. The attention makes it bigger, the bigger the story the more it’s likely to be dealt with.

What does the word ‘consent’ mean? The word ‘consent’ means “The permission from one person to another/others for something to happen, or an agreement to do something.” In a sexual context it is a way to “make sure that both party’s or more are on the same page when trying to continue with sexual intercourse”.

“Powerful men of an older generation are changing their thoughts of the word ‘consent’ “. Quote by Harvey Weinstein’s spokesperson, what does this quote mean to you. What it means to me is that the older generation weren’t taught consent and if they were aware of the word they didn’t care for it but as the younger generation got exposed to the word more often through social media it became something they would talk about more often and people, especially powerful older men, would be held accountable for their lack of knowledge and ignorance for the meaning of consent more often as well.

Why might women NOT speak up about their experience before the reporters talked to them? Why might they try to move on? The women that were approached by the reporters at first didn’t want to share because they were scared, the man who had done that to them was very powerful and had a lot of money, he had the power to pay off anyone’s silence. Making the women feel alone in their struggles.

Which other businesses/aspects of society might the issues/concerns of this movie be relevant to? Anywhere when there is a power difference like, modelling, schools, big companies with a CEO states. For a place with higher or lower power differences, there is a chance for people to be able to take advantage of their power.

‘She Said’ QnA [12Health Part 1]

1. What briefly happened in the movie? Give 3-4 sentences. If you were not in class for the whole movie, look at imdb.com- “She Said”

  • Two journalists are given the task of investigating ‘sexual misconduct in Hollywood’. They focus on Harvey Weinstein, owner of the movie company Miramax, and his history of sexual harassment and assault claims. Jodie Kantor and Megan Twohey reach out to women that were assaulted by Weinstein, either off record or on record, so that they can share their stories. By the end of the movie, they publish the article exposing Weinstein’s disgusting behavior along with the usage of his money to cover up all his misdeeds.

2. “If the story was not shared, nothing would change.” This is a core message throughout She Said. What makes sharing personal stories and experiences so powerful?

  • By sharing a story, others in similar positions can relate to what’s being said. Especially when there may be shame or societal pressure (in the case of SA/rape: being perceived as a slut or an attention seeker for speaking out) involved due to stereotypes or biases. When you know others relate to your experience and were brave enough to speak up, it inspires encouragement knowing that they aren’t alone. Both when facing the backlash of speaking up but also just emotionally; other people feel exactly how they feel.

3. What does the word consent mean? Following your definition, specifically refer to consent in a relationship/sexual context.

  • Consent is a clear yes/permission. Any variation of no or outright silence is not consent. There are different forms of consent in relationships (blanket consent, unspoken consent, boundaries) and it’s about communication and comfortability.

4. “Powerful men of an older generation are changing their thoughts on the word consent”. This quote was said by Harvey Weinstein’s spokesperson, what does this quote mean to you?

  • As societal standards change, these men of the older generation are pressured to flow with them. Before, they were allowed to get away with a lot more as women had less rights but with modern society woman have the ability to speak up for themselves and fight for what they believe is right.

5. Many of the women had not spoken up before the reporters talked to them. Why might women NOT speak up on this issue? Why might they try to move on?

  • They are afraid of the consequences. Even in the show, some of the women who had left Harvey/Miramax were affected career-wise. They were basically forced from the industry and were ignored by police departments. Furthermore, they could be afraid of how they may be perceived by their communities and the consequences of speaking against volatile, angry men.  Finally, it could also come down to trauma. They may just want to let it go as it is a situation that had hurt them and it is a story that belongs to them, no one else.

6. For women that had wanted to speak up, what were some of the recurring barriers and risks that prevented sexual assault survivors from publicly coming forward against their attackers?

  • Settlements/NDA’s.

7. While this movie is about Harvey Weinstein and his movie company, Miramax, which other businesses/aspects of society might the issues/concerns of this movie be relevant to?

  • Models, teachers, any companies with a power imbalance

8. The #metoo movement (metoomvmt.org) was started up following this movie/court case. Look over their website and list:

-who can be involved in the movement

  • The Movement includes anyone who supports the cause.

-what resources/information they provide for individuals affected by sexual violence

  • They offer shelters for victims in need, hotlines/chats for anyone who needs to talk and much more.

Questions for ‘She Said’ movie

  1. What briefly happened in the movie?   There were two female reporters from the New York Times, who were looking for people go on the record about the sexual assault case by Harvey Weinstein. Harvey Weinstein was the film producer for Miramax.  The two reporters traveled and called and emailed and visited and finally found people to go on the record about their experience with Mira max.
  2. “If the story was not shared, nothing would change.” This is a core message throughout She Said. What makes sharing personal stories and experiences so powerful?  The victims sharing their stories and experiences is so powerful because it takes a lot of courage to speak up, and a woman said that if she spoke up she would be sued because they had a non-disclosure settlement. They were paid to be silenced.
  3. What does the word consent mean? Following your definition, specifically refer to consent in a relationship/sexual context consent means “permission for something to happen or agreement to do something.” Consent in a relationship means to an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity.
  4. Powerful men of an older generation are changing their thoughts on the word consent”. This quote was said by Harvey Weinstein’s spokesperson, what does this quote mean to you?  This could mean that some men are changing their perspective of giving consent and they might think that they could do whatever without the other person giving consent. This could mean that sexual assault cases could happen more often and have less proof of it being sexual assault without there being consent.
  5. Many of the women had not spoken up before the reporters talked to them. Why might women NOT speak up on this issue? Why might they try to move on?  The victims of Harvey Weinstein had not much power against him, he was a very put together man who was well off, so it would have been their word against his. They might have tried to move on because there wasnt much that could have happened if there was a settlement to silence them.
  6. For women that had wanted to speak up, what were some of the recurring barriers and risks that prevented sexual assault survivors from publicly coming forward against their attackers?  Harvey Weinstein and his team agreed to a non-disclosire settlement and paid them for their silence. If they spoke out they could have been sued.
  7. While this movie is about Harvey Weinstein and his movie company, Miramax, which other businesses/aspects of society might the issues/concerns of this movie be relevant to? This could happen in any work place in society, Any male worker could blackmail/ assault a female. Police offers, doctors and even teacher can blackmail their students for a better grade.
  8. The #metoo movement (metoomvmt.org) was started up following this movie/court case. Look over their website and list:
-who can be involved in the movement
-what resources/information they provide for individuals affected by sexual violence. This website can help yourself, someone else or join the movement. They provide a page for your healing process, taking action, get to know them, or staying imformed.
