Super Squid

We have been reading the big book Super Squid. Did you know that giant squid have eyes as big as dinner plates.

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we watched a video about 10 facts about giant quid and then did an online quiz in Blooket. Teachers can make a quiz on Blooket and then the class can play it in 2 ways.

If you play it “Live” everyone plays together with speed and accuracy giving points. We could see the time each person took to answer the question and their accuracy after each question. We played it twice and here are our results.

Ka pai to mahi Billy!

Then you can play it in “Homework” mode. Each player joins when they are ready and competes to complete stages by answering the questions. Interestingly the answers appear in different places each time you go to the questions.

Here is the leaderboard from the end of our Cybersmart lesson.

Bees – Fun Facts

Today we created a video with some fun facts about bees.
We used Canva to make the video. We were able to add text, elements to create an eye catching design.
We created a bee wagggle dance. We animated the bees so they moved and “waggled”.

We could make them move using custom animation which means we could make them go where we wanted them to.
We added some fun music for the bees to dance to.

Do you know why bees do a waggle dance?

Korero in Scratch

This week is Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. So we have used Scratch to build a scene where 2 sprites meet and have a korero.

We had lots of steps to do before we got to creating our scene and coding.

We had to join Miss McIntosh’s Scratch class and create a username and password. Then we had to name our project and save it to a Studio. This took quite a while so we only just started coding our sprites and setting up a background. We learnt how to put in code so it resets when we click the green flag – this makes the sprites go back to the beginning. We made our sprites glide for 4 seconds to another position.

Next week we will record our voices in Scratch and make our sprites have their korero.

Here is some of our mahi so far. Click on the green flag to start.

Korero in Scratch Jnr

For 2 weeks we have been using Scratch Jnr on our iPads to create projects we here we koereo Māori.

We made our sprites meet and greet each other. One sprite says “Ko wai tō ingoa?” and the other sprite replies “Ko ___ tōku ingoa”.

We had fun making our sprites move. Some of us chose sprites where we could put our faces into the character.

We had to screen record on or iPds then upload the video into our Drive. Phew! What a lots of steps!

Here is some of our mahi.

Mahakirau – a local story

Today we reread the story of Mahakirau. This is a story from our local area. We had read the story earlier in the year. Did you know that Mahakirau had a pet shark? You can read the story on our class site here.

After reading the story we did an online quiz hosted by Blooket. Teacher can make quizzes in 2 ways. You can play live which is really competitive! Speed and accuracy count. We did the quiz twice. Here are the results.

Ka mau te wehi Hurinui!

Ka pai to mahi Maxwell!

Then we played the quiz individually and had to complete stages in a game called Crazy Kingdom. Here is the leaderboard from this mornings game. I wonder if anyone will overtake Georgia?

Animated Drawings with AI

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we animated some art in Sketch Lab

First we drew a figure on plain white paper. We had to make sure the arms and legs were well defined! Then we took a photo of it with our Chromebook camera. Then we could upload that into Sketch Lab and animate it. There were lots of animations to choose from.

Here is some of our mahi from today. You have to click on the links to view the animations.

Drawing with AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we explored 3 AI drawing tools. AI stands for Artificial Intelligence.

We used Quick Draw, Auto Draw and Sketch Canvas to animate a drawing.

We used Quick Draw and Auto Draw and took screenshots of our mahi to add to our slides.

To use Sketch Canvas we drew a figure on a piece of white paper. We had to make sure the arms and legs were well defined. We took a photo of our work with our Chromebook Camera dn uploaded it to the tool. Then we could choose different animations. To share our mahi we copied a link and put that on our slide.

Here is Oscar’s mahi. Don’t forget to click on his links on slide #4 to view his animations.

Using our Chromebook to do the Mahi

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we turned on 2 accessibility features on our Chromebooks: Select-to-speak & Dictation.

Select-to-speak enables us to select some text on our screen and our Chromebook will read it to us. This can be a word, a sentence, a paragraph or a whole page.

Dictation allows us to speak to our device and it will type the text for us.

We practised using these 2 features today to read about birds and answer some questions.

Here is Atena’s mahi.

Screen Recording

We are learning different ways to use your chrome book to record.

Today we explored how to use screen capture to record ourselves reading a book online.

Our steps were to;

  • listen to the book by clicking the speaker icon to hear the story first
  • listen to it back, re-record if needed.

What ways do you record your learning?

Extraordinary Earthworms

We have read the book “Extraordinary Earthworms” in class. We found out lots about this creature. Did you know that they can eat the equivalent of 150 bananas per day?

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we played Blooket and the quiz was about Extraordinary Earthworms. We had lots of fun. We played it live together first where speed and accuracy gave us points.

Here is the result. Ka pai tō mahi Lillie-Rose!

Then we played it individually in the Tower of Doom. Mrs Torrie set the Blooket as a “Homework” task. When you play it like this you can get it to read the questions and answers to you.

You can see that Carmello was leading the way just before lunchtime.
