Cybersmart: Digital Artists!

Kia ora koutou,

This week, the tau rua tamariki in Ruma 18 combined math and art to create amazing digital kararehe using shapes!

Here is how we did it:

  • The Setup: We started by typing our names and the date on the digital whiteboard.

  • The Creation: We used Shape tools to build our animals and the fill bucket to splash them with bright colours.

  • The Extra Skills: Learners learned how to resize and duplicate their art.

We saw some incredible creativity! Most learners created an ika, duplicated it into a school of fish, and added bubbles and backgrounds. We even had an awesome raiona in the making!

Great Mahi Ngātahi

Our Year 2s did a fantastic job with their mahi ngātahi, working together in teams to help each other bring their digital designs to life.

Term 2 week 1- 4 highlights

Kia Ora Whānau,

We hope you are all well and keeping warm.

Recently, our tamariki in Room 1 have been enjoying many wonderful learning experiences and special celebrations. We celebrated Mother’s Day and Pink Shirt Day, where children had the opportunity to design beautiful cards for their mums and colour their own pink T-shirts. It was an incredible day seeing all of Room 1 proudly wearing pink. Thank you, whānau, for your support and effort in helping your child participate. These special events are always more meaningful and successful with your continued support.

Recently, five of our children transitioned from Room 1 to Room 2, and we also welcomed our new friends into our classroom. We warmly welcome our new tamariki to Room 1. They are settling in beautifully, learning our classroom routines, and becoming part of our learning.

In Inquiry learning, we have been exploring the topic of Living Things. Children are learning about what living things are, how they grow, and what they need to survive and thrive. As part of our hands-on learning, tamariki painted the planter boxes, explored the texture of bean seeds, soaked the seeds, and observed them sprouting. We are now excited to transfer the seedlings into planting cells and continue growing our baby plants.

We are also enjoying learning new dance moves every Friday during Let’s Siva sessions and are looking forward to our final performance on Friday, 22 May.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s learning journey.

Ngā mihi,
Room 1

Trip to the Zoo !!

Today, the whole Rangi Team went on an exciting trip to the zoo. The students were super excited from the moment they arrived at school and couldn’t wait to begin the day’s adventure.

We travelled to the zoo by bus along with Room 15, which made the journey even more fun. Everyone enjoyed the ride and was eager to see the animals.

At the zoo, the students learnt about adaptation and how animals change to survive in their environments. One of the highlights was seeing real examples like a tiger claw and skull bone, which helped students understand how animals are suited to their habitats.

The students also saw many amazing animals, including tigers, giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, orangutans, crocodiles, tortoises, meerkats, spider monkeys, and many different types of birds.

Pink Shirt Day – Year 3 Learning

In week 4, Room 7 – Year 3  students took part in Pink Shirt Day, a special event that promotes kindness, respect, and standing up against bullying. Students showed their support by wearing pink and joining in class discussions about how we can treat others kindly every day.

As part of our learning, students completed a writing activity on a shirt template. They wrote thoughtful messages about kindness and friendship, then coloured their shirts creatively. It was great to see students using positive words and sharing ideas about how to be a good friend.

Our classroom was filled with bright colours and meaningful messages that reflected our shared values. Students were proud of their work and enjoyed displaying their finished pink shirts.

We are proud of Room 7 for showing respect, teamwork, and kindness throughout this important week.

Introducing…

We are so lucky in Room 22 to have Matua Ravneel Gounder joining us for a few weeks for his teaching practicum. Matua Ravneel is a keen soccer player and has quickly become part of our whānau. We are really enjoying having him in our classroom.

For our Mitey lessons, we have been learning about recognising emotions through body language. This aligns really well with our Inquiry learning about the brain, as the brain controls our bodies and emotions.

Every second Friday we have Garden to Table with Matua Levi and Whaea Stepanie from Manurewa High School. This week we were able to go next door to Manurewa High School to visit their māra (garden). We saw that the seeds we had planted had grown into seedlings and were ready to plant. We also harvested Jerusalem Artichokes to plant in our own garden. Then we worked hard in the afternoon, digging our new garden bed and planting. We were all very tired by home time!

And this week’s Tama recipient was Fateh! Have a great weekend with Tama, Fateh. We’re all looking forward to hearing about his weekend with you when he comes back to school on Monday.

Actors Ready!

Today in Drama lesson with Kate, we learned about characters, theatre, movies, and scripts. We began by sitting in a circle and getting ourselves “actor ready.” Everyone introduced themselves and shared how they were feeling, helping us build confidence and connection as a group.

We then played a fun drama game where we walked around the room and froze into different poses. After that, we completed body and face warm-ups to prepare ourselves for acting. We explored different facial expressions and practiced using rhythm, tone of voice, and volume to see how they can change the meaning and impact of a performance.

We also talked about what it feels like to step onto a stage. Sometimes performers may feel nervous, but it is important to stay brave, confident, and give things a go. We learned that being a great audience is just as important as being a great actor. Everyone showed encouragement and respect by cheering each other on during our acting activity, where we practiced walking onto the stage and confidently saying a sentence. It was wonderful to see everyone supporting one another and having fun with drama!

Room 18’s Cybersmart Challenge!

Kia ora whānau of Room 18,

This week, we put our digital skills to the test with an exciting Screenshot Challenge!

Here is a look at what we had to do:

  • Step 1: Made a copy of our challenge Google Slides, initialed it, and saved it safely into our Cybersmart folders.

  • Step 2: Practiced our screenshot shortcut keys.

  • Step 3: Searched for specific images, took a screenshot of them, and inserted them into our slides.

  • Step 4: Got creative by using the screenshot tool to design something completely new!

To finish it all off, we screenshotted our hard work and posted it directly to our student blogs.

How Did We Do?

Despite our classroom TV still playing up a bit and making it a little tricky to see the main screen, Room 18 absolutely smashed it!

  • The Successes: Every learner successfully figured out how to take screenshots and insert them into their slides.

  • Blog Stars: Most of the class managed to get their finished work published to their blogs for you all to see.

Check it out: Feel free to visit your child’s blog today to leave a comment on their awesome screenshotting skills!

Check out some of our learners work featured below!

Cybersmart: The Screenshot Challenge!

Welcome back to the Room 14 blog!

This week for Cybersmart, we leveled up our digital skills with the Screenshot Challenge.

Learning how to capture exactly what is on our screen is a major digital superpower. Here is how we did it:

Our Mission:

  1. Organise: We made a copy of the challenge slides, initialed them, and saved them into our Cybersmart folders.

  2. Search & Snip: After a quick reminder of the screenshot shortcut keys, we searched for images online, took screenshots, and inserted them into our slides.

  3. Creature Creation: The ultimate test! We had to use the screenshot tool to capture different pieces and build a unique digital creature.

  4. Blog: Finally, we took a screenshot of our completed mahi (work) to share on our blogs.

How We Did:

Everyone did an awesome job tackling the screenshot challenge! While it was a bit tricky and only some of us managed to fully complete our digital creatures, most of the class successfully blogged their learning.

Term 2, Week 3

This week we’ve been learning about Measurement in Maths. We’re still very excited about our garden that we began planting last week, so we decided to measure it along the length. We used non-standard measurement to begin with, such as arm lengths and…children! Waka Ahukura hosted this week’s assembly on Thursday, where we performed the waita, “Rona”

This weekend, Tama has gone home with Nur Raisya. Well done! We know that Tama will have a great weekend with your family.

Measuring, Exploring, and Learning Through Science

We explored measurement using different tools such as rulers, metre sticks, and measuring tapes. We practised measuring objects in mixed units and learned that our Blue Muscle mat was 4 metres and 7 centimetres long. We also learned about circumference, which means the distance around something, by measuring the compost bin and our waist circumference. In science, we used drama to show how water molecules behave in solids, liquids, and gases. Students stood closely together as solids, moved slowly as liquids, and spread out as gases. It was a fun and hands-on week of learning and discovery.
